Book Description
Excerpt from Oil Firing for Kitchen Ranges and Steam Boilers The principal object now in view is to give a brief description of the combustion of heavy residues or fuel oil in a cooking range for culinary purposes. Some general remarks on the production of crude petroleum and fuel oil, together with other information relating thereto, is included, as, comparatively speaking, the average householder or hotel proprietor knows littler or nothing of oil for firing purposes. Previous to the war, fuel oil had not been used in the kitchen as far as the author is aware, and it was entirely due to the great scarcity and high cost of coal, brought about by war conditions, that means were devised for firing kitchen ranges with similar residues to those that are used for firing purposes in the furnaces of steam generators. There are many excellent liquid-fuel burners on the market for steam-raising and other purposes, but neither in design nor method of application do they conform with the exacting requirements of the domestic kitchen, in simplicity, reliability, cleanliness, and range of power. For the kitchen range, a burner that will give a continuous flame of small dimensions is a necessity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Elements of Fuel Oil and Steam Engineering: A Practical Treatise Dealing With Fuel Oil, for the Central Station Man, the Power Plant Operator, the Mechanical Engineer and the Student The rapidity with which the first edition of this book was exhausted has exceeded the fondest expectations of its writers. The field of fuel oil in its uses in steam electric generation, though an important one, is somewhat narrow in the number of people involved in its study. The early exhaustion of the first edition, however, has given the authors an opportunity to re-write the book and to add many new and interesting advances that have been made during the three year period since the first edition appeared upon the market. We are particularly grateful to Prof. L. S. Marks of Harvard University, to Prof. W. F. Durand of Stanford University; Mr. C. R. Weymouth, chief engineer of Charles C. Moore & Co.; Messrs. R. J. C. Wood and H. L. Doolittle of the Southern California Edison Company; Mr. E. A. Rogers, chief engineer of steam electric generation for the New Cornelia Copper Co.; Mr. E. H. Peabody, consulting engineer; Prof. E. H. Lockwood of Yale; Dr. D. S. Jacobus, advisory engineer of the Babcock and Wilcox Company; and Mr. J. E. Woodbridge of Ford, Bacon and Davis, for valuable information, helpful suggestions, and a kindly and encouraging attitude for further efforts in the compilation of this work. Many of the newer portions of this work have first appeared in print either in the columns of the Electrical World or the Journal of Electricity, and to these two publications we are grateful for the interest and kindly suggestions they have given to us. Book Description
Excerpt from The Blue Book of Oil Burning and Burners: A Practical Handbook Compiled for the Operator of Oil Burners, It Gives Information, on Oil and Burners, Their Care, Operation and Safety Hints, in Plain English When we speak of fuel oil we generally mean the oil which is burned in the furnaces of steam boilers. The best engineer is the one who can make the most steam with the least fuel. Heat may be produced in many ways, but for the purpose of the marine engineer it is only necessary to consider the heat generated in the furnace by burning fuel oil and coal. Book Description
Excerpt from Oil Fuel Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio fields was considered too valuable to be used for any but refinery purposes, and, moreover, it was not adapted for fuel in its crude stages, on account of its light, volatile nature. With the opening up of the California, Oklahoma, and Gulf Coast oil fields, of Texas, Louisiana and Mexico-yielding a heavier product in enormous quantities, and one admirably adapted for boiler use - these conditions were changed, the consequence being a demand for oil, with all its advantages over any other commercial fuel except natural gas. The Texas Company was early in this oil fuel field, organizing in the year 1902. Since that time, by fair dealing and reliability, in connection with con stant attention to the demands of its customers, its present large oil fuel trade has been developed.
