Book Description
Jeanne E. Clark heeds Dickinson's advice to tell all the truth and tell it slant. Rather than settling for the preening gush or anecdotal flatness of much contemporary poetry, her work travels down roads named Bluelick and Slabtown to retrieve a rich sense of place and a sinewy American language. Like the best blues songs, these poems create an oblique music of leaps and gaps; they let reticence reverberate and sing. The world of Ohio Blue Tips is a place of Marlowe beds and Coniber traps, bluegills and yellow rutabaga, pronating arches and charcoal briquets. It is an interior furnished with Moo-Cow Creamers, eyelet tableskirts, and Mae West cats. Clark's implied narratives confront class and aspiration in the unfamed lives of Joe Silver, a retarded prisoner whose eyes are the blue tips of kitchen matches, and Quinn Margaret who is Backslidden and given over / To a reprobate mind.

Book Description
Mixing memoir and cultural criticism, Memory's Orbit examines the intersections between a wide range of films and current events, finding its theme and orbiting narrative structure in the personal stories we live within and their relationship to the social and cultural order. Joseph Natoli covers such films as The Matrix, American Beauty, Fight Club, Eyes Wide Shut, and American History X, as well as such headline events as the death of John F. Kennedy Jr., the dot-com boom, the WTO protests in Seattle, and Bush versus Gore, consistently identifying those aspects of the social order that have shaped his narrating frame. Eschewing theoretical exposition and jargon, Natoli performs postmodern critique, and this book continues his innovative work in the genre of cultural studies.

Book Description
Attempting to repair the fissures of everyday life, Brian Brodeur negotiates the psychological distances between desire and disgust, humor and catastrophe, banality and dream. The poems of Other Latitudes begin in the realm of personal experience, and expand into larger territories of cultural narcissism and political blindness. These poems meditate on the tenuous relationship between artist and subject, the curiosities of self-inflicted wounds, and the presence of hope in a landscape that is intrinsically scarred. Brodeur's debut illustrates the conflict between inner lives and their outward appearances, with an eye turned to the unforgiving natural world.

Book Description
Keller's Turn: a Novel concerns the life of Frank Keller, biotech billionaire, husband, avid sailor, runner, and bow hunter who, at fifty-three, sees his life come to bits in the days preceding Christmas. On a Friday night, the first night of the long holiday weekend, his wife of three decades decides to leave him (decamping for their Aspen house for the holidays), and, at a loss, Keller tries to reconstruct the remains his life through lonely action. In doing so, he telephones his ranch manager in Texas to check in and discovers that their Alpha bison, the largest male in the herd, is going crazy, destroying other livestock and wreaking havoc on the ranch. The manager says the aging (and expensive) bison may have to be put down in the interest of the other livestock and the property, and Keller nominates himself for the job, using his bow and arrow and hunting the bison on horseback across the ranch. It does not end well for the bison, other innocent people, and Keller himself. Taut, visual, and ultimately visceral, it's a good read.

Book Description
Meet Mr. Bones, the canine hero of Paul Auster's remarkable new novel, Timbuktu. Mr. Bones is the sidekick and confidant of Willy G. Christmas, the brilliant, troubled, and altogether original poet-saint from Brooklyn. Like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza before them, they sally forth on a last great adventure, heading for Baltimore, Maryland in search of Willy's high school teacher, Bea Swanson. Years have passed since Willy last saw his beloved mentor, who knew him in his previous incarnation as William Gurevitch, the son of Polish war refugees. But is Mrs. Swanson still alive? And if she isn't, what will prevent Willy from vanishing into that other world known as Timbuktu? Mr. Bones is our witness. Although he walks on four legs and cannot speak, he can think, and out of his thoughts Auster has spun one of the richest, most compelling tales in recent American fiction. By turns comic, poignant, and tragic, Timbuktu is above all a love story. Written with a scintillating verbal energy, it takes us into the heart of a singularly pure and passionate character, an unforgettable dog who has much to teach us about our own humanity.
