Par la plume et par l'action, sa ligne ne variera jamais : conjurer la tentation totalitaire par un gouvernement représentatif équilibré et garantissant toutes les libertés, celle de la presse comme celle des Noirs. C'est pourquoi il s'opposa vivement à l'Empire autoritaire puis à la Restauration réactionnaire.
