Pages : 7
Book Description
The authors report the first observation of an excited singly-charmed baryon {Omega}*{sub c} (css) in the radiative decay {Omega}{sub c}{sup 0}{gamma}, where the {Omega}{sub c}{sup 0} baryon is reconstructed in the decays to the final states {Omega}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}, {Omega}{sup -} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0}, {Omega}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup +}, and {Xi}{sup -} K{sup -} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. This analysis is performed using a dataset of 230.7 fb{sup -1} collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The mass difference between the {Omega}*{sub c} and the {Omega}{sub c}{sup 0} baryons is measured to be 70.8 {+-} 1.0(stat) {+-} 1.1(syst) MeV/c{sup 2}. They also measure the ratio of inclusive production cross sections of {Omega}*{sub c} and {Omega}{sub c}{sup 0} in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation.

First Observation of An Excited Charm Baryon Decaying to Omega Charm Baryon at the BaBar Experiment

Pages : 115
Book Description
We have carried out a search for a charmed baryon [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ decaying to [Omega]$0\atop{c}$ and a [gamma] where [Omega] c candidates are reconstructed using decay modes [Omega]-[pi]+(c1), [Omega]-[pi]+[pi]0(c2), [Omega]-[pi]+[pi]-[pi]+(c3) and [Xi]-K-[pi]+[pi]+(c4). This search is performed by analyzing integrated luminosity of 230.7 fb-1 data collected by the BABAR detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In decay channel [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ → [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Omega]-[pi]+)[gamma] (C1), we observe a signal yield of 39.2$+9.8\atop{-9.1}$ (stat)±6.0(syst) events with a significance of 4.2 standard deviations. In decay channels [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ → [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Omega]-[pi]+[pi]0)[gamma] (C2) and [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ →} [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Xi]-K-[pi]+[pi]+)[gamma] (C4), we observe signal yields of 55.2$+16.1\atop{-15.2}$ ± 5.6 and 20.2$+9.3\atop{-8.5}$ ± 3.1 with significances of 3.4 and 2.0 [sigma], respectively. As for the [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ → [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([Omega]-[pi]+[pi]-[pi]+)[gamma] (C3) decay channel, we observe signal yields of -5.1$+5.3.8\atop{-4.7}$±1.0 without a positive significance. We assume the same production mechanism for the four decay channels of [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ studied. By combining these four channels, the fit results in a signal yield of 105.3$+21.2\atop{-20.5}$± 6.0 events with a significance of 5.2 [sigma]. We report the mass difference [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ - [Omega]$0\atop{c}$([delta]m) of the singly charmed baryon [Omega]$*\atop{c}$ to be 70.8$+1.0\atop{-1.0}$±1.1 MeV. Finally, the ratios of production cross sections are calculated: [sigma](e+e-→C1)/[sigma](e+e-→c1) = 0.71$+0.19\atop{-0.18}$±0.11, [sigma](e+e-→C2)/[sigma](e+e-→c2) = 1.76$+0.71\atop{-0.69}$±0.19, [sigma](e+e-→C3)/[sigma](e+e-→c3) = -0.66$+0.74\atop{-0.66}$±0.13, [sigma](e+e-→C4)/[sigma](e+e-→c4) = 1.70{sup +1.0}{sub -1.0}±0.27 and [sigma](e+e-→[Omega]$*\atop{c}$ (combined))/[sigma](e+e-→[Omega]$0\atop{c}$) = 1.0$+0.23\atop{-0.22}$±0.11.

Book Description
We present a study of excited charm-strange baryon states produced in ee− annihilations at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV, in a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 384 fb−1 recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e storage rings at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We study strong decays of charm-strange baryons to?{sub c}+K{sub S}°,?{sub c}+K−,?{sub c}+K−?+,?{sub c}+K{sub S}°?−,?{sub c}+K{sub S}°?−?+,?{sub c}+K−?−?+. This study confirms the existence of the states?{sub c}(2980)+,?{sub c}(3077)+, and?{sub c}(3077)−, with a more accurate determination of the?{sub c}(2980)+ mass and width. We also present evidence for two new states,?{sub c}(3055)+ and?{sub c}(3123)+, decaying through the intermediate resonant modes?{sub c}(2455){sup ++}K− and?{sub c}(2520){sup ++}K−, respectively. For each of these baryons, we measure the yield in each final state, determine the statistical significance, and calculate the product of the production cross-section and branching fractions. We also measure the masses and widths of these excited charm-strange baryons.

A Study of Double-Charm and Charm-Strange Baryons InElectron-Positron Annihilations

Book Description
In this dissertation I describe a study of double-charm and charm-strange baryons based on data collected with the BABAR Detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. In this study I search for new baryons and make precise measurements of their properties and decay modes. I seek to verify and expand upon double-charm and charm-strange baryon observations made by other experiments. The BABAR Detector is used to measure subatomic particles that are produced at the PEP-II storage rings. I analyze approximately 300 million e+e- → c{bar c} events in a search for the production of double-charm baryons. I search for the double-charm baryons?{sub cc} (containing the quarks ccd) and?{sup ++}{sub cc} (ccu) in decays to?+{sub c}K−?+ and?+{sub c}K−?+?+, respectively. No statistically significant signals for their production are found, and upper limits on their production are determined. Statistically significant signals for excited charm-strange baryons are observed with my analysis of approximately 500 million e+e- → c{bar c} events. The charged charm-strange baryons?{sub c}(2970)+,?{sub c}(3055)+,?{sub c}(3123)+ are found in decays to?+{sub c}K−?+, the same decay mode used in the?+{sub cc} search. The neutral charm-strange baryon?{sub c}(3077)° is observed in decays to?+{sub c}K?−. I also search for excited charm-strange baryon decays to?+{sub c}K8,?+{sub c}K−,?+{sub c}K8?−?+, and?+{sub c}K−?−?+. No significant charm-strange baryon signals a f h these decay modes. For each excited charm-strange baryon state that I observe, I measure its mass, natural width (lifetime), and production rate. The properties of these excited charm-strange baryons and their decay modes provide constraints for phenomenological models of quark interactions through quantum chromodynamics. My discovery of the two new charm-strange baryons?{sub c}(3055)+ and?{sub c}(3123)+ influences our theoretical understanding of charm-strange baryon states.
