How can artists in a developing country be able to dedicate themselves to the laborious task of creating art when there are few resources? How can the government and intellectuals support artists without imposing a centralized idea of national culture? This book explores these questions and others, focusing on lived experience in the ABC region of São Paulo, Brazil. Dengue and its potentially fatal forms, dengue henorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, once more threaten much of the Americas. In the 1980s the vector control programmes fell victim to the cutbacks in public health expenditure and their responses to dengue outbreaks tended to be a little too late. These guidelines have risen to the challenge by incorporating all aspects of the prevention and control of the disease and its vectors.
