La finalité orthodontique est d'obtenir une occlusion fonctionnelle, une denture esthétique et stable dans le respect de l'environnement neuromusculaire du patient. La réalisation de ces objectifs passent par : une analyse initiale minutieuse avec une évaluation de la/ou des malocclusions dans leur intégralité, de la position de référence du traitement ; le contrôle des mécaniques mises en jeu lors du traitement, et une attention portée sur le système manducateur dans son ensemble tout au long du traitement ; le recours à une équilibration par adjonction ou meulage di nécessaire ; la mise en place d'une contention efficace. De nombreux auteurs ont décrits l'occlusion que nous devions obtenir à la fin du traitement actif et dans quelles mesures les relations dentaires s'amélioraient spontanément à leur retrait. Selon l'école de pensée, on obtiendra une occlusion en fin de traitement actif la plus idéale possible, les remaniements attendus sont minimes, soit on obtiendra une occlusion non idéale transitoire qui se rétablira pendant la période du recovery. Plusieurs méthodes sont à notre portée pour éliminer certains contacts néfastes résiduels, ou affiner les rapports dento-dentaires à la fin du traitement. Ceci pourrait améliorer la stabilité de nos résultats. cette étude passe par un rappel des bases de l'occlusion, nécessaire à l'établissement d'un diagnostic correct ainsi que d'un plan de trraitement rationnel. La deuxième partie est consacrée à l'observation du devenir de l'occlusion et de l'articulation temporo-mandibulaire pendant la mécanique orthodontique. La troisième partie traite de l'ccclusion obtenue en fin de traitement actif, des remaniements lors de la phrase de "settling" de l'occlusion, et de la fonction occlusale obtenue. Enfin, la quatrième partie apporte les conséquences cliniques et les intérêts de ces observations, à savoir les modalités de conduite de la fin de traitement, de conduite de l'équilibration et les principes de la contention.
