Este é um trabalho de pesquisa teórica com apoio de pesquisa de campo exploratória no qual procurou-se apresentar o fenômeno do chamado terceiro setor no Brasil, (representado por organizações sem fins lucrativos e organizações não-governamentais orientadas por valores e mobilizadoras de ações que resultam em beneficio social) sob a ótica da comunicação organizacional. A divisão funcional da sociedade em três partes (setor público, privado e o terceiro setor) é uma questão que gera bastante discussão e posicionamentos distintos, principalmente com relação à natureza e objetivos de cada um desses segmentos. Contudo, é evidente e inegável a crescente influência que o setor vem exercendo no cenário mundial. Pesquisou-se a trajetória histórica desse setor e sua influência social e econômica, e fez-se o levantamento de algumas tendências mercadológicas e políticas que envolvem as atividades das organizações sem fins lucrativos, com seus possíveis desdobramentos no panorama de um mundo globalizado. A constatação é que as instituições do terceiro setor estão ganhando força e visibilidade, ocupando espaços no palco mundial e constituindo-se em protagonistas políticos e sociais cada vez mais importantes. Nesse percurso, a busca pela profissionalização e pela compreensão de seu papel na sociedade e o emprego de princípios e modelos de gestão estratégica nessas instituições tem se tornado uma prática cada vez mais necessária.
