Book Description
In his review of the Proceedings of the First International Workshop on Respiratory Muscles in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, organized in Montescano in 1986, Thomas K. Aldrich stated that "there is little information on nutrition". We felt that the need to supplement the evaluation of respiratory muscles by studying nutritional problems was an important enough matter to justify producing a specific study on the subject. This book is the result of the efforts made in this direction. Since 1986, many of the problems associated with nutrition and ventilatory function have been elucidated, and we hope that the contents of this book may contribute towards spreading interest and knowledge in this sector, particularly among those working in the field of respiratory rehabilitation. The physiological and clinical aspects of nutritional problems and the therapeutic approaches adopted in different disease conditions are dealt with in these pages by some of the best-known researchers in the field, providing abundant evidence, if any should be needed, that rehabilitation is not merely exercise. The picture strongly emerging over these last few years is that rehabilitation is not merely a matter of knowledge of lung or respiratory muscles, but also of heart-lung interaction, metabolic equilibrium and nutrition. So much for recent developments, but what does the future hold in store? May 1992 RENATO CORSICO Preface Nutrition and ventilation are inextricably related.

Book Description
Lacking the capacity to store oxygen, the human organism depends on having an unimpaired and continuous supply of oxygen for its survival. Life-threatening disturbances can be encountered by the clinician at any step in the oxygen cascade from ambient air to tissue metabolism. It is therefore necessary for the mechanisms of oxygen uptake, transport, distribution and diffusion into tissues as well as the unaffected cellular metabolism to be well understood and monitored. An international symposium focusing on these issues was held in Münster, FRG, May 11-12, 1990. This book contains the lectures held at the symposium, and thus provides an excellent basis for further discussion.

Book Description
This book is the first of a new series which will present the proceedings of the newly established Nestlé Nutrition Workshop Series: Clinical & Performance Programme aimed at adult nutrition. Undernutrition is a common phenomenon in elderly people, and malnutrition reaches significant levels in those being in hospital, nursing homes or home care programs. Consequences of malnutrition often go unrecognised owing to the lack of specific validated instruments to assess nutritional status in frail elderly persons. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) provides a single, rapid assessment of nutritional status in the elderly of different degrees of independence, allowing the prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition to be determined and to evaluate the efficacy of nutritional intervention and strategies. Easy, quick and economical to perform, it enables staff to check the nutritional status of elderly people when they enter hospitals or institutions and to monitor changes occurring during their stay. Moreover, the MNA is predictive of the cost of care and length of stay in hospital. This publication will be of immense assistance to heads of geriatric teaching units, teachers in nutrition, clinicians general practitioners and dieticians, enabling them to better detect, recognise and start treatment of malnutrition in the elderly.

Book Description
This is a comprehensive and authoritative textbook on pediatric pulmonology. Edited by Pablo Bertrand and Ignacio Sánchez, renowned academics and pediatricians from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, it encompasses five sections and 74 chapters, presenting and discussing the most important topics related to pediatric respiratory diseases. Written and presented in a simple and didactic format, it intends to ease learning and settlement of doubts in pediatric respiratory diseases. The reader is naturally introduced into the physiology, diagnosis, syndromes, diseases and the treatment associated with the respiratory pathologies affecting children. The chapters include algorithms for the treatment of various syndromes and updated treatment proposals grounded in evidence-based medicine for more than 50 pulmonary diseases. Pediatric Respiratory Diseases – A Comprehensive Textbook is an essential reference for the proper clinical approach to respiratory diseases in children. It is intended for all interns, residents and fellows with interest in pediatric pulmonary medicine, as well as practicing physicians, general practitioners, pediatricians and pulmonologists who face pediatric respiratory disorders in daily clinical practice.

Book Description
In examining the relationship between nutritional exposure and disease aetiology, the importance of a carefully considered experimental design cannot be overstated. A sound experimental design involves the formulation of a clear research hypothesis and the identification of appropriate measures of exposure and outcome. It is essential that these variables can be measured with a minimum of error, whilst taking into account the effects of chance and bias, and being aware of the risk of confounding variables. The first edition of Design Concepts in Nutritional Epidemiology presented a throrough guide to research methods in nutritional epidemiology. Since publication of the 1st edition, we now have a much better understanding of the characteristics of nutritional exposure that need to be measured in order to answer questions about diet-disease relationships. The 2nd edition has been extensively revised to include the most up-to-date methods of researching this relationship. Included are new chapters on qualitative and sociological measures, anthropometric measures, gene-nutrient interactions, and cross-sectional studies. Design Concepts in Nutritional Epidemiology will be an essential text for nutritionists and epidemiologists, helping them in their quest to improve the quality of information upon which important public health decisions are made.

Book Description
The tracheobronchial tree is open to the environment surrounding the body. Respiration has thus the essential bearing on general morbidity, vulnerability to disease and immunity. Further, respiratory function shapes the neuropsychological responses to succumbing to disease, controls the mind-to-body interaction and sets the perception of quality of life. The chapters of this book deal with the preventable drivers of poor respiratory health, the role of health information technology, the improvement in health care delivery and the integration of respiratory health and behavioral health services. Innovative strategies to promote prevention, care coordination and care integration as well as to align disease acceptance and quality of life measures also are tackled. Maintaining respiratory health is of rising research interest as a way of preventing a disease or a non pharmacological therapeutic succor. The book will be of interest to clinicians, family practitioners and medical researchers.

Book Description
This book provides up-to-date knowledge on all aspects of the multidisciplinary approach to pulmonary rehabilitation that is essential in order to achieve optimal results. It will be an ideal resource especially for pulmonologists in training, but will also be of value for physiotherapists, other health care professionals, and technicians. Detailed information is presented on the diverse program components in pulmonary rehabilitation, with clear explanation of the roles of the nutritionist, psychologist, occupational therapist, respiratory nurse, and physical activity coach. Guidance is provided on identification of candidates for pulmonary rehabilitation and on all aspects of assessment, including exercise capacity, muscle function, and physical activity. Patient-centered, economic, and other outcomes are examined, with separate discussion of combined outcome assessment. Furthermore, due consideration is given to organizational aspects of pulmonary rehabilitation and to rehabilitation in specific scenarios, e.g., thoracic oncology and surgery, transplantation, and the ICU. The authors are internationally recognized experts selected for their expertise in the topics they discuss.
