Numerical methods and related computer based algorithms form the logical solution for. many complex problems encountered in science and engineering. Although numerical techniques are now well established, they have continued to expand and diversify, particularly in the fields of engineering analysis and design. Various engineering departments in the University College of Swansea, in particular, Civil, Chemical, Electrical and Computer Science, have groups working in these areas. It is from this mutual interest that the NUMETA conference series was conceived with the main objective of providing a link between engineers developing new numerical techniques and those applying them in practice. Encouraged by the success of NUMETA '85, the second conference, NUMETA '87, was held at Swansea, 6-10 July 1987. The physical modelling of metal forming processes has been widely used both in University and in Industry for many years. Relatively simple numerical models, such as the Slab Method and the Upper Bound Method, were first used and many such models are implemented in the industry for practical design or regulation of forming processes. These are also under investigation in the University, mainly for treat models ments which require low cost calculations or very fast answers for on-line integration. More recently, sophisticated numerical methods have been used for the simulation of metal flow during forming operations. Since the early works in 1973 and 1974, mainly in U. K. and U. S. A. , the applications of the finite element method to metal processing have been developed in many laboratories all over the world. Now the numerical approach seems to be widely re cognized as a powerful tool for comprehension oriented studies, for predic ting the main technological parameters, and for the design and the optlmi zation of new forming sequences. There is also a very recent trend for the introduction of physical laws in the thermo-mechanical models, in order to predict the local evolution of internal variable representing the micro structure of the metal. This course with 6 lecturers intends to present a systematic survey of recent re search results of well-known scientists on error-controlled adaptive finite element methods in solid and structural mechanics with emphasis to problem-dependent concepts for adaptivity, error analysis as well as h- and p-adaptive refinement techniques including meshing and remeshing. Challenging applications are of equal importance, including elastic and elastoplastic deformations of solids, con tact problems and thin-walled structures. Some major topics should be pointed out, namely: (i) The growing importance of goal-oriented and local error estimates for quan tities of interest—in comparison with global error estimates—based on dual finite element solutions; (a) The importance of the p-version of the finite element method in conjunction with parameter-dependent hierarchical approximations of the mathematical model, for example in boundary layers of elastic plates; (Hi) The choice of problem-oriented error measures in suitable norms, consider ing residual, averaging and hierarchical error estimates in conjunction with the efficiency of the associated adaptive computations; (iv) The importance of implicit local postprocessing with enhanced test spaces in order to get constant-free, i. e. absolute-not only relative-discretizati- error estimates; (v) The coupling of error-controlled adaptive discretizations and the mathemat ical modeling in related subdomains, such as boundary layers. The main goals of adaptivity are reliability and efficiency, combined with in sight and access to controls which are independent of the applied discretization methods. By these efforts, new paradigms in Computational Mechanics should be realized, namely verifications and even validations of engineering models.
