Many flows of aeronautical interest have regions where turbulence has a significant effect. For many of these flows, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulation (RANSS) techniques do not give an acceptable description of the flow. In these cases a more detailed simulation of the turbulence is required. One such detailed simulation technique, large-eddy simulation (LES) has matured to the point of application to complex flows. Historically, LES have been carried out with structured grids which suffer from two major difficulties: the extension to higher Reynolds numbers leads to an impractical number of grid points, and most real world flows are rather difficult to represent geometrically with structured grids. Unstructured-grid methods offer a release from both of these constraints. Within this sponsored research significant progress has been made towards the application of the above approach to flows of aeronautical interest.

The ability of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) to predict critical flow characteristics has always been questionable. Flow separation over lifting surfaces such as airfoils are one of the critical features which can significantly deteriorate their aerodynamic performances. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the accuracy of two CFD methods in predicting the flow separation over a NACA0025 airfoil at low Reynolds numbers. The first code is an in-house code which is based on a 3D compressible Navier-Stokes solver with preconditioning and self-adaptive upwinding methods. The second code is the commercial FLUENT software. In order to accurately simulate the laminar boundary layer separation, the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method is used for turbulence modeling of both codes. Results comparison shows that Fluent is not able to capture this feature. In addition the results are also compared with another similar numerical simulation and validated with available experimental data.

This volume contains contributions to the BRITE-EURAM 3rd Framework Programme ETMA and extended articles of the TMA-Workshop. It focusses on turbulence modelling techniques suitable to use in typical flow configurations, with emphasis on compressibility effects and inherent unsteadiness. These methodologies are applied to the Navier-Stokes equations, involving various turbulence modelling levels from algebraic to RSM. Basic turbulent flows in aeronautics are considered; mixing layers, wall-flows (flat-plate, backward-facing step, ramp, bump), and more complex configurations (bump, aerofoil). A critical assessment of the turbulence modelling performances is offered, based on previous results and on the experimental data-base of this research programme.
