Book Description
The theoretical description of pion-nucleus interactions, specifically in the intermediate-energy region dominated?-excitation, is discussed. Attention is focused on the interaction with and propagation through the nucleus of pions and?'s. The approach followed basically consists of viewing the?-nucleus system, formed by pion excitation of a nucleon, as a doorway for the pion-nucleus reaction. Analysis of the interacting?-nucleus system then leads to new dynamical information summarized in a complex?-nucleus interaction potential. The associated nuclear medium corrections to? propagation, related in more conventional language to higher-order corrections in the pion optical potential, are so large as to demand consideration in quantitative studies of nuclear structure with pions. After a discussion of the basic scale parameters characterizing intermediate-energy pion-nucleus interactions, the author discusses the theoretical framework and the extraction of? interaction parameters from inclusive pion-nucleus cross sections. More detailed tests of the picture, such as elastic scattering angular distributions, are then discussed. Finally, some implications for intermediate-energy photoreactions are outlined. 11 figures. (RWR).

Book Description
Recently a symbiotic relationship between particle and nuclear physics has developed, with techniques and ideas from one field fertilizing developments in the other. This work outlines concepts from modern particle physics important to the current understanding of nuclear physics and reviews experiments involving nuclei which have influenced the present particle physics view of the weak interaction. In his discussion, the author summarizes both past and present activity in the field and identifies areas for future work. Familiarity with quantum mechanics is assumed in the presentation of ideas in this book intended for readers at the graduate level and beyond. A major goal of Weak Interactions in Nuclei is to encourage further activity at the intersection of particle and nuclear physics, two path-breaking areas of study in modern physics. Originally published in 1989. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Description
Supersymmetry, supergravity and superstring are the most popular research topics in particle physics. In particular, the phenomenological studies beyond the standard model have become very popular in view of possible identification or exclusion of supersymmetric particles in the future. Also, the lightest supersymmetric particle in most supersymmetric models can be a good candidate for dark matter in the universe. The recent developments in supersymmetry with important applications to particle physics are the main theme of this book, which includes superstring calculations with D-branes, TeV-scale gravity, superstring- and supergravity-inspired interactions, supersymmetric GUT, supergravity phenomenology, and cosmological implications of LSP.
