Book Description
During the contract year progress was made in the goals of studying intermediate energy physics. Experiments E-80, E-81, and E-197 were carried out at LAMPF. The year was largely devoted to data acquisition and the analysis of the data acquired. Significant improvements in the data capture programs and system hardware resulted in improvements in data collection. A list of publications is included. (JFP).

Book Description
During the year 1973 the program goals of carrying out experimental and theoretical studies in intermediate energy physics were continued. Work at the Space Radiation Effects Laboratory on small-angle pion Coulomb multiple scattering from nuclei was completed, and the small-angle Coulomb--nuclear interference studies and total cross sections were continued. Experiments on p--d breakup were started and, in addition to observing quasi-free nucleon-- nucleon scattering, a strongly enhanced neutron--proton final state interaction was observed at 585 MeV for the first time. In July 1973 the outfitting of the Rice-owned portable laboratory was completed, including operation of the AEC-owned PDP-11 online computer system, and the laboratory was moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico (LAMPF). In the fall of 1973 the group aided the LAMPF staff in tuning the P3 pion channel. Principal collaborators in all this work were the University of Houston group. (auth).

Book Description
The research during the year included new experimental and theoretical work on nuclear reaction mechanisms, nuclear polarization, and studies of nuclear structure. The principal equipment employed to carry out this research were the AEC-owned 5.5MeV and EN Tandem Van de Graaff accelerators and the on-line IBM 1800 Computer System housed in the Rice University-owned T.W. Bonner Nuclear Laboratories. New understanding was obtained during the year on problems of neutron physics, multiparticle breakup, nuclear structure, nuclear theory, and certain nuclear applications to medicine. (auth).

Book Description
Research carried out during the contract period by R.A. Bryan, principal investigator, and associates R.B. Clark and B.J. VerWest is reported. Most of the work has centered on the nucleon-nucleon interaction at low to intermediate energies and has ranged from purely theoretical studies, such as the behavior of two-pion-exchange Feynman amplitudes at far off-shell initial and final nucleon momenta, to the more practical work of phase-shift analyzing nucleon-nucleon data. One has also investigated the possibility that the NN interaction is not invariant under time-reversal and have provided predictions for some relevant experimental observables for the case where such time-irreversibility is due to short-range processes. Finally, research on topics which fall in the domain of elementary-particle physics but which are felt can lend guidance in trying to determine the NN force at very short distances is completed; this is the current frontier in nucleon-nucleon research. A list of publications is included.
