Book Description
Excerpt from Notes Upon Some of Shakespeare's Plays Things dramatic and things theatrical are often confounded together in the minds of English people, who, being for the most part neither the one nor the other, speak and write of them as if they were identical, instead of, as they are, so dissimilar that they are nearly opposite. That which is dramatic in human nature is the passionate, emotional, humorous element, the simplest portion of our composition, after our mere instincts, to which it is closely allied, and this has no relation whatever, beyond its momentary excitement and gratification, to that which imitates it, and is its theatrical reproduction; the dramatic is the real, of which the theatrical is the false. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes Upon Some of the Obscure Passages in Shakespeare's Plays: With Remarks Upon the Explanations and Amendments of the Commentators in the Editions of 1785, 1790, 1793 The following Notes of the Lord Chedworth, upon the various readings of the different commentators on Shakespeare, seem to be the result of a critical and laborious investigation of the obscure passages of that inimitable Bard; intended either for his own private information and amusement, or (as it appears from some internal evidence) with a view to their being subsequently laid before the Public in a more corrected state. To amend or enlarge his Lordships observations falls not within my province or ability; but as I have strong reason to suppose that a part of these Notes will be offered to the world in a different way, and less perfect form, I feel it a duty, which I owe to the memory of his Lordship, to edite them entire, in order to distribute copies to our respective friends, and to those readers of taste in similar studies, who may not deem such a trifle unworthy of their acceptance. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes and Emendations to the Text of Shakespeare's Plays: From Early Manuscript Corrections in a Copy of the Folio, 1632, in Possession of J. Payne Collier I lost no time in thanking Mr. Moore for these tidings, and in writing to Mr. Parry for all the particulars within his knowledge. Unfortunately the latter gentleman, just before he received my note, had met with a serious injury, which confined him to his bed, so that he was unable to send me any reply. For about ten days I remained in suspense, but at last I determined to wait upon Mr. Moore to inquire whether he was aware of any reason why I had not received an answer from Mr. Parry. He accounted for the silence of that gentle man on the ground of his recent accident; and as Mr. Moore was confident that Mr. Parry was correct in the conclusion that my folio, 1632, had formerly belonged to him, he ad vised me to call upon him, being sure that he would be glad to satisfy me upon every point. I accordingly hastened to St. John's Wood, and had the pleasure of an interview with Mr. Parry, who, without the slightest reserve, gave me such an account of the book as made it certain that it was the same which, some fifty years ago, had been presented to him by a connexion of his family, Mr. George Gray. Mr. Parry described both the exterior and interior of the volume, with its innumerable corrections and its missing leaves, with so much minuteness that no room was left for doubt. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Shakespeare S Workmanship The following papers were first written as Lectures and so spoken before an audience in the University of Cambridge. Being shy of repeating myself too often in print in the guise of a lecturer, I have turned my second persons plural into third persons singular. But I am sensible that the change will only commend itself by help of the reader's good-will in remembering all the while that these are familiar discourses rather than learned enquiries. They seek to discover, in some of Shakespeare's plays, just what he was trying to do as a playwright. This has always seemed to me a sensible way of approaching him, and one worth reverting to from time to time. For it is no disparagement to the erudition and scholarship that have so piously been heaped about Shakespeare to say that we shall sometimes find it salutary to disengage our minds from it all, and recollect that the poet was a playwright. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes, Criticism, and Correspondence Upon Shakespeare's Plays and Actors The sketches and essays which occupy the follow ing pages, necessarily partaking more or less of a personal character - the author so often Speaking of his own experience or observations - there would seem to be required no further preface at his hands. He cannot, however, neglect to avail himself of the time-honored privilege of saying a word to the reader, were it only to exchange the customary form of salu tation when meeting. For he would have his book regarded not as an elaborate attempt at authorship to which he makes no pretensions - but in the spirit of a familiar and friendly, yet earnest conversation, when one is listened to with partiality, as he discourses upon topics of admitted interest, or revises the traits of those whom the world has been accustomed to admire. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes and Conjectural Emendations of Certain Doubtful Passages in Shakespeare's Plays The following Notes and Conjectural Emendations of certain Doubtful Passages in Shakespeare's Plays are the result chiefly of a careful study of the First Folio (Booth's Reprint and Staunton's Facsimile) and of the "Cambridge Shakespeare," edited by the Rev. Messrs. W. G. Clark and W. Aldis Wright. To this last valuable work, showing as it does at one glance the various readings of the old copies, and giving the results of the labours of all preceding editors and commentators, I am indebted for any appearance of research in my Notes. Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on Shakespeare's Play of a Midsummer Night's Dream The Etymological part of these Notes is the most important no word of real value has been overlooked, and I have verified every derivation by a reference to Skeat. But there are other special features which will be sought for in vain in any other single work. I would call particular attention to the appendices on Scansion, Grammatical Peculiarities. And Paraphrasing, and to the Critical Remarks given under the head Of Miscellanea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth: Edited, With Notes I have likewise omitted most of the Critical Com ments from the introduction and elsewhere, as the books from which they were taken are now generally accessible in public and school libraries. For these extracts I have substituted comments of my own, in the course of which I have attempted to settle some ques tions that have been much discussed, but, to my think ing, never satisfactorily answered. I have endeavoured to show how Shakespeare himself answers them, instead of reading into the play what is not there, as some excellent critics seem to me to have done.
