Nondestructive Evaluation of Steel Bridges
Author: Theodore Hopwood (II)
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Iron and steel bridges
Languages : en
Pages : 98
Book Description
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods can be used to assess in-service steel bridges for problematic conditions caused by factors such as design, manufacturing, fabrication, and the service effects of traffic and corrosion. This report discusses typical NDE test methods used on bridges, including penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing (including phased array testing), radiography, and acoustic emission testing. NDE operations such as flaw location, characterization, and sizing are covered as well. Results of a national survey of departments of transportation’s (DOTs) use of NDE are presented. A simple procedure for using NDE to address DOT bridge concerns is proposed along with a risk-based inspection approach to scheduling/scoping bridge inspections.

Nondestructive Testing of Materials and Structures
Author: Oral Büyüköztürk
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400707231
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 1231
Book Description
Condition assessment and characterization of materials and structures by means of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods is a priority need around the world to meet the challenges associated with the durability, maintenance, rehabilitation, retrofitting, renewal and health monitoring of new and existing infrastructures including historic monuments. Numerous NDT methods that make use of certain components of the electromagnetic and acoustic spectrum are currently in use to this effect with various levels of success and there is an intensive worldwide research effort aimed at improving the existing methods and developing new ones. The knowledge and information compiled in this book captures the current state of the art in NDT methods and their application to civil and other engineering materials and structures. Critical reviews and advanced interdisciplinary discussions by world-renowned researchers point to the capabilities and limitations of the currently used NDT methods and shed light on current and future research directions to overcome the challenges in their development and practical use. In this respect, the contents of this book will equally benefit practicing engineers and researchers who take part in characterization, assessment and health monitoring of materials and structures.

Nondestructive Testing & Identification for Bridge Rating
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bridges
Languages : en
Pages : 294
Book Description
Nondestructive dynamic field testing and structural identification studies on three (2, 20, and 43-year-old) steel-stringer bridges are presented. The bridges were rated by code procedures and by field-calibrated comprehensive 3-D finite-element models developed by structural identification. Experimentally measured and analytically simulated modal flexibilities were correlated with bridge deflections obtained under proof-load level truck-load tests.
