Book Description
In both the popular imagination and among lawmakers and national security experts, there exists the belief that with sufficient motivation and material resources, states or terrorist groups can produce bioweapons easily, cheaply, and successfully. In Barriers to Bioweapons, Sonia Ben Ouagrham-Gormley challenges this perception by showing that bioweapons development is a difficult, protracted, and expensive endeavor, rarely achieving the expected results whatever the magnitude of investment. Her findings are based on extensive interviews she conducted with former U.S. and Soviet-era bioweapons scientists and on careful analysis of archival data and other historical documents related to various state and terrorist bioweapons programs.Bioweapons development relies on living organisms that are sensitive to their environment and handling conditions, and therefore behave unpredictably. These features place a greater premium on specialized knowledge. Ben Ouagrham-Gormley posits that lack of access to such intellectual capital constitutes the greatest barrier to the making of bioweapons. She integrates theories drawn from economics, the sociology of science, organization, and management with her empirical research. The resulting theoretical framework rests on the idea that the pace and success of a bioweapons development program can be measured by its ability to ensure the creation and transfer of scientific and technical knowledge. The specific organizational, managerial, social, political, and economic conditions necessary for success are difficult to achieve, particularly in covert programs where the need to prevent detection imposes managerial and organizational conditions that conflict with knowledge production.

Book Description
Elusive and enigmatic, zen koans have long puzzled people with their surprise meanings hidden in simple tales. Now one of America's finest translators of Asian philosophy provides a brillian new translation of the 12th century Wumenguan, the most popular of Chinese Zen koans. In Unlocking the Zen Koan (originally published as No Boundary), Thomas Cleary translates directly from the Chinese and interprets Zen Master Wumen's text and commentaries in verse and prose on the inner meaning of the koans. Cleary then gives us other great Chinese Zen masters' comments in prose or verse on the same koan. Cleary's probing, analytic commentaries wrestle with meaning and shading, explaining principles and practices. Five different steps to follow in reading the koan being with its use as a single abrupt perception, and lead progressively to more intellectual readings, illustrating the fixations which stand in the way of a true Zen understanding.

Book Description
“Boaler is one of those rare and remarkable educators who not only know the secret of great teaching but also know how to give that gift to others.” — CAROL DWECK, author of Mindset “Jo Boaler is one of the most creative and innovative educators today. Limitless Mind marries cutting-edge brain science with her experience in the classroom, not only proving that each of us has limitless potential but offering strategies for how we can achieve it.” — LAURENE POWELL JOBS “A courageous freethinker with fresh ideas on learning.” — BOOKLIST In this revolutionary book, a professor of education at Stanford University and acclaimed math educator who has spent decades studying the impact of beliefs and bias on education, reveals the six keys to unlocking learning potential, based on the latest scientific findings. From the moment we enter school as children, we are made to feel as if our brains are fixed entities, capable of learning certain things and not others, influenced exclusively by genetics. This notion follows us into adulthood, where we tend to simply accept these established beliefs about our skillsets (i.e. that we don’t have “a math brain” or that we aren’t “the creative type”). These damaging—and as new science has revealed, false—assumptions have influenced all of us at some time, affecting our confidence and willingness to try new things and limiting our choices, and, ultimately, our futures. Stanford University professor, bestselling author, and acclaimed educator Jo Boaler has spent decades studying the impact of beliefs and bias on education. In Limitless Mind, she explodes these myths and reveals the six keys to unlocking our boundless learning potential. Her research proves that those who achieve at the highest levels do not do so because of a genetic inclination toward any one skill but because of the keys that she reveals in the book. Our brains are not “fixed,” but entirely capable of change, growth, adaptability, and rewiring. Want to be fluent in mathematics? Learn a foreign language? Play the guitar? Write a book? The truth is not only that anyone at any age can learn anything, but the act of learning itself fundamentally changes who we are, and as Boaler argues so elegantly in the pages of this book, what we go on to achieve.

Book Description
I have noticed in visiting with folks far and near that there were those who were "stuck" in old doctrines and traditions of teachings that denied basic understandings of the true nature and purposes of God as well as their own God-given power and ability. They were held under the influence of those who watered down the truth to fit the human condition rather than elevate the human condition to fit the truth. While others, perhaps more progressive in their knowledge of truth, suffered under the phenomena of knowing far more than their ability to apply it to daily living. They felt defeated, crushed and confused. In their quest for something real and true they often missed some very basic understandings and experiences along the way. I have come to call this "throwing the baby out with the bath water." This is throwing out the good and needful with the bad and confining. Both camps of spiritual thought needed foundational repairs and restructuring. A house cannot stand if parts of the foundation are missing. The desire to bring the best of both worlds together and preserve the truths each have, as well as the desire to see us all live and understand to our highest potential is what has motivated this book. In With Wings There Are No Barriers, motivational speaker Sue Augustine offers her personal strategies to living your best life. “Growing your wings fully could happen quickly; however, taking flight doesn’t always occur in an instant. . . . But every worthwhile dream is worth the effort, the pain, the heartache of setbacks and failures, and the time invested. I urge you to believe that you can fly. You will begin to experience the ecstasy of being free, totally free, to soar to new heights!” —Sue Augustine What, exactly, are wings, and why are they so important? As Sue Augustine tells us, wings are important because they provide a Power of Purpose. They allow women to navigate the currents of the winds of life and avoid the barriers and obstacles in it. WINGS are, in fact, Worth, Insight, Nurturing, Goals, and Strategies. In order to live a happy, productive life, a woman needs to be able to stretch her wings and fly. Sue Augustine provides women everywhere with a guide to a life with no barriers a life of magnificent possibilities. “Sue’s life has moved from tragic to magic.
