Ignoring the advice of their Hungarian and Transylvanian allies the Crusaders charged the Turks and were in turn smashed by the Ottoman heavy cavalry. The last Crusade ended on the banks of the Danube as the Crusaders desperately sought to escape from the pursuing Turks.

A major new exploration of the history and development of gunpowder weapons in the 15th century based on the artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy. The four Valois Dukes of Burgundy created, in little more than a century, a fabulously wealthy and independent state. Their centralised control and chancellery have bequeathed to us a vast treasure trove of documents, including accounts and inventories of the Masters of the artillery under the later Dukes. Although many of these were extracted and transcribed in the late nineteenth century, modern historians have largely ignored their unprecedented insights into fifteenth-century guns and their use. When Charles the Bold, the last Valois Duke, took on the combined Swiss confederate forces in 1476 he lost not just the battles and his personal fortune, but much of his artillerytrain as well. Of the dozens of cannons captured, at least 25 pieces survive in Swiss museums. The documents that survive from the Valois state give us, almost for the first time in medieval Europe, the ability to see the course of history in a period when Europe was undergoing some of the most profound changes before the 20th century. The Artillery of the Dukes of Burgundy is the first attempt to combine all these sources, bringing newand fresh insights into the development and use of artillery in the fifteenth century. Moreover this is the first modern study of medieval cannon, one of the most important discoveries of the post-classical world. The history of the Crusade of Nicopolis is the final chapter of a larger work on the Fourteenth Century Crusade. Neither of these subjects has been treated fully as a separate study. Owing, however, to limitations of time and space, it has been decided to write the history of the first and prepare the bibliography of the second. An exhaustive inquiry into the sources, manuscript and printed, has resulted in a complete narrative of the Crusade of Nicopolis, with previous errors rectified and many problems of general interest settled. The crusading propaganda, the routes towards Nicopolis, the elements of the conflicting hosts, the character and the tactics of the leaders, the use of the arrow and the horse, the Janissaries in the fourteenth century, the battle and its aftermath, the effect of the Christian defeat on the western mind and on the Muhammadan world, the chronology of the Crusade, the origin of the title of Sultan in Turkey - all these and other problems have received careful consideration, and transcriptions and translations form Western and Eastern manuscripts have been provided to illustrate the various aspects of the Crusade. Moreover, much light has been thrown on this study by a visit to the battlerfield and its approaches, and a special map of the Nicopolis district has been prepared for this purpose by the Royal Geographical Institute of Bulgaria at Sofia. War was epidemic in the late Middle Ages. It affected every land and all peoples from Scotland and Scandinavia in the north to the southern Mediterranean Sea coastlines of Morocco, North Africa, Egypt, and the Middle East in the south, from Ireland and Spain in the west to Russia and Turkey in the east. Nowhere was peaceful for any significant amount of time. The period also saw significant changes in military theory and practice which altered the ways in which campaigns were conducted, battles fought, and sieges laid; and changes in the leadership, recruitment, training, supply and financing of armies. There were changes in the relationship between those waging warfare, from generals to irregular troops, and the society in which they lived and for or against which they fought; the frequency of popular rebellions and the participation in them by townspeople and peasants; changes in the desire to undertake Crusades, and changes in technology, including but not limited to gunpowder weapons. This collection gathers together some of the best published work on these topics. The first section of seven papers show that throughout Europe in the later Middle Ages generals led and armies followed what are usually defined as "modern" strategy and tactics, contrary to popular belief. The second part reprints nine works that examine the often neglected aspects of the process of putting and keeping together a late medieval army. In the third section the authors discuss various ways that warfare in the fourteenth and fifteenth century affected the society of that period. The final sections cover popular rebellions and crusading.
