Materials relating to a canal chartered by the State of Connecticut in 1822, connecting New Haven to Southwick, Mass., via Farmington, Conn., opening in 1828 (known as the Farmington Canal) which was extended into the State of Massachusetts (under name Hampshire and Hampden Canal) from Southwick to Westfield in 1829 and completed to Northampton in 1835; in 1855 the canals suffered heavy damage and both companies sold out to a new company: New Haven and Northampton Canal Company which put the whole system under one control, operating it until 1845 when the canal was replaced by a railroad.
