Book Description
Neutral pion photoproduction on the nucleon near threshold is investigated using a dynamical model. It is shown that the commonly used procedure, based on an analytical continuation of the K-matrix to the unphysical region, is not compatible to a dynamical approach. We show that the final state interaction (FSI) amplitude derived from a dynamical model could involve large cancellation between the different pion photoproduction mechanisms. This leads that the FSI due to the intermediate [pi]°p state can be as important as that due to the [pi]n intermediate state. At threshold, we obtain E{sub 0+} = -1.92 × 10−3/m{sub {pi}+}. This number is close to the measured value of E{sub 0+} = -1.5 × 10−3/m{sub {pi}+}. No violation of the low energy theorem is required to obtain good agreement between the calculated total cross sections and experimental data drum threshold to about 400 MeV incident photon energy. 10 refs., 4 figs., 3 tabs.

Book Description
This collection of articles contains a systematic outline of original experimental and theoretical research on photoproduction of neutral pions at protons and at a strongly bound system of a few nucleons, i.e., the helium nucleus. Spark chambers and their use as spectrometers for photons and electrons are described in detail. The articles of the collection include information on a novel method of determining the efficiency of recording apparatus by generating monochromatic photons. The articles de scribe original theoretical research on the optical anisotropy of nuclei. Problems encountered in experimental studies of operating the synchrotron as a storage-type accelerator of electrons and positrons receive particular attention. The results of this research work are listed, and the problems of oppositely directed electron-positron beams in the 250-MeV synchrotron are considered. The articles should be of interest to physicists, including research workers, teachers, engineers, graduate students, and students in advanced undergraduate courses. v CONTENTS Photoproduction of Neutral Pions at Nucleons and Nuclei B.B. Book Description
This volume consists of twelve review articles and a variety of short contributions which are based on lectures presented at the International Symposium on Photopion Nuclear Physics. The review articles were submitted after the sym posium, and there was considerable editing and cross referen cing with the aim of achieving a greater overall unity than ordinarily found in conference proceedings. Photopion Nuclear Physics, as the name suggests, combines two of the most active areas of current intermediate energy nuclear physics research - electromagnetic phenomena as studied by means of electron scattering and photonuclear pro cesses, and mesonic effects in nuclei. The potential value of photopion studies as a complement to electron scattering for the study of spin-isospin aspects of nuclear transitions has been widely recognized for about a decade, thanks to the the oretical work at such institutions as Stanford and Catholic Universities. In fact, some of this theoretical work was done in anticipation of the advent of the new high duty cycle and good energy resolution electron linacs. The potential for using this reaction to study mesonic effects was not as broad ly addressed at that time. However, as seen in the following pages of these proceedings, that situation has dramatically changed.

Book Description
The Second Workshop on Electronuclear Physics with Internal Targets and the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST) took place at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in May 1998. A total of 75 physicists from 26 institutions located in seven countries participated in a lively meeting focused on the unique and important advantages of polarized gas targets internal to an electron storage ring in the study of hadron structure. This meeting has reaffirmed the contributions that BLAST will make in the area of few-body physics. The BLAST detector is designed to measure the spin-dependent electromagnetic response of light nuclei in the momentum transfer range up to 0.8 (GeV/c)2. It will use the 1 GeV longitudinally polarized beam of the Bates South Hall Ring and polarized internal targets. BLAST is scheduled to be completed in 2001.

Book Description
In recent years, the main research areas were photonuclear reactions and meson productions by using the first high-duty tagged photon beam and the TAGX spectrometer. Although this field is developing quite rapidly, the synchrotron was closed in 1999 after 37 years of operation, and these activities continue at new facilities. It was therfore a good time to discuss the present status and future directions of this field at this occasion. The Symposium was attended by 85 physicists and 35 talks were presented. This book contains the papers presented in the scientific program of the Symposium. aspects of kaon photoproduc
