Book Description
This is the eBook of the printed book and may not include any media, website access codes, or print supplements that may come packaged with the bound book. Automated Network Management Systems is ideal for advanced undergraduate or graduate-level courses in Networking or for professionals managing networks. Network management is an interesting, but intellectually challenging, problem — therefore, there is a big opportunity for research leading to automated systems that manage networks. In this innovative new text, Comer examines possibilities for the future, including ways to build software that automates management tasks. A basic understanding of networking (equivalent to one undergraduate course or experience in the field) is assumed.

Book Description
Public managers can, to a certain extent, choose between various mana- ment paradigms which are provided by public and business administration scholars and by politicians as well. How do they find their way in this c- fusing supermarket of competing ideas? This book explores how public managers in Western bureaucracies deal with the mutually undermining ideas of hierarchical, network and market governance. Do they possess a specific logic of action, a rationale, when they combine and switch - tween these governance styles? This chapter sets the scene for the book as a whole and presents the - search topic and the research question. 1.1 Problem setting Since the Second World War, Western public administration systems have changed drastically. The hierarchical style of governing of the 1950s to the 1970s was partly replaced by market mechanisms, from the 1980s - wards. In the 1990s, a third style of governing, based on networks, further enriched the range of possible steering, coordination and organisation - terventions. In the new millennium, public sector organisations seem to apply complex and varying mixtures of all three styles of what we will - fine as governance in a broad sense. This development has brought about two problems.

Book Description
Try to imagine a railway network that did not check its rolling stock, track, and signals whenever a failure occurred, or only discovered the whereabouts of its lo comotives and carriages during annual stock taking. Just imagine a railway that kept its trains waiting because there were no available locomotives. Similar thoughts could apply to any transport network of trucks, buses, or taxis covering a wide geographical area. It is quite clear that the quality of service and safety, and the cost efficiency of any network depend on the effective and timely man agement of network resources. The same is true of telecommunications networks. For a long time now, telecom munications networks have been designed and built with remote monitoring and control devices. The very dimensions of networks and the need to intervene rap idly in the event of an incident made these devices imperative. On the other hand, the means of measuring quality of service did not appear till much later. Data transmission networks developed during the 1970s were often designed without any network management features. The technical traditions of the world of information technology had been forged on small systems with just a few dozen terminals spread over a small area. At the time, the extension of networks to cover wide geographical areas was not perceived as a change of dimension.
