Book Description

French is used on every continent, spoken not only in France but also in Belgium, Switzerland, North America, the Caribbean, Polynesia and Africa. It clearly introduces the language's history, phonetics (pronunciation), phonology (sound system), morpho-syntax (how words and sentences are formed), pragmatics (how speakers express meaning), and lexicology (the study of word composition and derivation) - with each chapter showing how these aspects are subject to regional and social variation. English translations are provided for all examples, and the book contains an extensive bilingual glossary of linguistic terms, and numerous exercises and essay questions in every chapter. French: A Linguistic Introduction will be welcomed by advanced language learners, and by linguists studying the structure of this important language.

Sensibility, Reading and Illustration
Author: Ann Lewis
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351194658
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 361
Book Description
"Eighteenth-century sensibilite has always been controversial. In fact, the term itself refers to complex forms of physical and emotional responsiveness, and Lewis's study investigates the fictional exploration of various key problems of sentimental response that were at the heart of eighteenth-century moral, epistemological and aesthetic debates. These are analysed in conjunction with some of the actual (often emotional) responses that the term, its fictions and images have provoked through time, including an indispensable survey of the varying construction of sensibilite as an object of study, and the polemics subtending its definition. The verbal evocation of the visual in the form of 'spectacles' and 'signs' was understood in the eighteenth century as having an especially powerful impact. Lewis provides a new reading of the theme of sensibility by analysing the 'textual images' in three best-selling novels from the mid-century: Graffigny's Lettres d'une Peruvienne, Marivaux's La Vie de Marianne and Rousseau's Julie. The examination of a largely neglected corpus of illustrations, understood as readings of each text, provides striking new evidence of the complexity, thematic richness and duplicity of these spectacles, whose power to provoke different reactions is perhaps their most interesting characteristic."

Linguistics, Anthropology and Philosophy in the French Enlightenment
Author: Ulrich Ricken
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134901704
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 313
Book Description
Linguistics, Anthropology and Philosophy in the French Enlightenment treats the development of linguistic thought from Descartes to Degerando as both a part of and a determining factor in the emergence of modern consciousness. Through his careful analyses of works by the most influential thinkers of the time, Ulrich Ricken demonstrates that the central significance of language in the philosophy of the enlightenment, reflected and acted upon contemporary understandings of humanity as a whole. The author discusses contemporary developments in England, Germany and Italy and covers an unusually broad range of writers and ideas including Leibniz, Wolff, Herder and Humboldt. This study places history of language philosophy within the broader context of the history of ideas, aesthetics and historical anthropology and will be of interest to scholars working in these disciplines.

Prose Poems of the French Enlightenment
Author: Fabienne Moore
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.
ISBN: 9780754663188
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 326
Book Description
Tracing the prehistory of the French prose poem, Fabienne Moore demonstrates that the genre emerges nearly a century before it is generally supposed to have existed. Moore links the development of this new genre with the period's thinking about language and poetic invention, as she argues that scientific, philosophical, and socioeconomic upheavals prompted a paradoxical return during the Enlightenment to sources such as Homer, the pastoral, Ossian, the Bible, and primitive eloquence.
