Book Description
"Nedko Solakov's wide-ranging and exuberant work, which is hard to keep within formal bounds, is a singular assault on the desire for perfection, finality, and clarity. Starting from his studies of mural painting at the art academy in Sofia, the Bulgarian artist (born 1957) has developed an oeuvre over the past twenty-five years that is as humorous as it is playful, as stinging as it is melancholy, and which casts doubt on the authenticity of each and every system of representation. At the latest since his contributions to the 2007 Venice Biennale and Documenta 12, Solakov has occupied one of the central positions within current European art. This publication accompanies a large survey of his oeuvre that includes examples of his work from the late eighties to 2007, combined with pieces that have been created specifically for the exhibition Emotion."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
¿East Coast Europe,¿ which took place during Spring 2008, is a project about the perceptions of contemporary European identity and its relation to spatial practices and international politics. The title ¿East Coast Europe¿ is a word play. ¿Europe¿ in the title is the central topic for investigation, its contemporary culture, expansion, and its status as a continuing social project. ¿East Coast¿ refers to two distinct edges of Europe, both real and imaginary¿the geographical East Coast of the United States of America and the political ¿East Coast¿ of the European Union. The project invited leading figures in culture and politics from the two east coasts¿of the United States of America, and of the countries in the European Union and its vicinity to comment on their perception of Europe today. East Coast Europe dives into the urgent details of a dense network of contemporary experience of the European Union¿s extensive exchange of knowledge, people, and goods with the East Coast of the United States and also with its own eastern border. What are its challenges and possibilities for social, political and spatial practices? With contributions by Can Altay, Marina Abramović, Paddy Ashdown, Zdenka Badovinac, Katherine Carl, Eda Čufer, Reinier de Graaf, Mladen Dolar, Lisa Farjam, Srdjan Jovanović Weiss, Carin Kuoni, Zak Kyes, Jacques Le Goff, Aaron Levy, Genevieve Maitland Hudson with Cyril Blanc, Markus Miessen, Viktor Misiano, Miran Mohar, Shamim Momin, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Orchard, Dan Perjovschi, Marjetica Potrč, Neboj¿a ¿erić Shoba, Michael Shamiyeh, Erzen Shkololli, Taryn Simon, Nedko Solakov, Alenka Suhadolnik, Milica Tomić, Kazys Varnelis, Felix Vogel, Borut Vogelnik, Jordan Wolfson, and Sislej Xhafa.

Book Description
Over the past 50 years, East European artists have seen the virtual breakdown of their societies and their cultures. Instead of seeking to replace their devalued ideologies with new belief systems, many have profoundly challenged the very concept of belief systems. In this provocative exhibition catalogue, artists and essayists from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgari and Slovakia confront Eastern Europe's cultural watershed head on. In addition to the excellent illustrations, the book includes a foldout timeline of noteworthy events since 1945, plus regional maps and a statistical profile of each country.

Socially Engaged Art after Socialism
Author: Izabel Galliera
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1786722224
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 414
Book Description
Reclaiming public life from the ideologies of both communist regimes and neoliberalism, their projects have harnessed the politically subversive potential of social relations based on trust, reciprocity and solidarity. Drawing on archival material and exclusive interviews, in this book Izabel Galliera traces the development of socially engaged art from the early 1990s to the present in Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. She demonstrates that, in the early 1990s, projects were primarily created for exhibitions organized and funded by the Soros Centers for Contemporary Art. In the early 2000s, prior to Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania entering into the European Union, EU institutions likewise funded socially-conscious public art in the region. Today, socially engaged art is characterised by the proliferation of independent and often self-funded artists' initiatives in cities such as Sofia, Bucharest and Budapest.Focusing on the relationships between art, social capital and civil society, Galliera employs sociological and political theories to reveal that, while social capital is generally considered a mechanism of exclusion in the West, in post-socialist contexts it has been leveraged by artists and curators as a vital means of communication and action.

After Modernist Painting
Author: Craig Staff
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 0857722301
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
Painting has often been declared dead since the 1960s and yet it refuses to die. Even the status and continued legitimacy of the medium has been repeatedly placed in question. As such, painting has had to continually redefine its own parameters and re-negotiate for itself a critical position within a broader, more discursive set of discourses. Taking the American Clement Greenberg's 'Modernist Painting' as a point of departure, After Modernist Painting will be both a historical survey and a critical re-evaluation of the contested and contingent nature of the medium of painting over the last 50 years. Presenting the first critical account of painting, rather than art generally, this book provides a timely exploration of what has remained a persistent and protean medium. Craig Staff focuses on certain developments including the relationship of painting to Conceptual Art and Minimalism, the pronouncement of paintings alleged death, its response to Installation Art's foregrounding of site, how it was able to interpret ideas around appropriation, simulation and hybridity and how today painting can be understood as both imaging and imagining the digital. After Modernist Painting is an invaluable resource for those seeking to understand the themes and issues that have pertained to painting within the context of postmodernism and contemporary artistic practice.
