Questo volume raccoglie gli atti di un convegno di studi tenutosi all’Università di Napoli Federico II nell’ambito delle iniziative scientifiche del PRIN 2022 “Myths of Legitimations and Government of Difference in the European Imperial Regimes during the Modern and Contemporary Age”. I partecipanti sono stati invitati a offrire analisi relative a differenti aspetti di una delle relazioni centro-periferia più cruciali nella storia mondiale del XIX e XX secolo, vale a dire quella tra l’Impero britannico e il suo “gioiello della corona”, l’India. Attraverso un'esplorazione della natura dei conflitti nonché della collaborazione e della negoziazione tra diversi nazionalismi e l'Impero britannico, la Conferenza si è riproposta di chiarire cinque questioni principali: in che modo l'Impero britannico ha gestito la diversità dell'India e quale è stata la risposta della società indiana? La storiografia recente è andata oltre la caratterizzazione dicotomica del Raj britannico come progetto di “divide et impera” o come arbitro imparziale tra comunità in conflitto, come sosteneva il mito imperiale? In che misura i diversi nazionalismi furono un prodotto della contraddittoria modernizzazione dell’India, e questa a sua volta un effetto dell’incontro/scontro con l’Impero? In che senso i progetti nazionalisti dell’India erano genuinamente “nazionali” – anziché “comunalistici” – e in che modo sfidavano o rafforzavano la “politica della differenza” praticata dall’Impero? In che misura il movimento nazionalista indiano, nella sua varietà e interna conflittualità, e la risposta imperiale ad esso hanno plasmato i discorsi dell’India indipendente sull’identità nazionale e sui conflitti sociali? Più specificamente, i contributi raccolti nel volume sviluppano analisi raggruppate attorno a due prospettive. In primo luogo, l’esame comparativo dei diversi nazionalismi “religiosi”, in particolare indù e musulmano; e, in secondo luogo, il ruolo delle figure chiave che rappresentano i diversi filoni e le diverse fasi del movimento nazionalista indiano, da Gandhi a Tilak, da Bhagat Singh ad Ambedkar. I due saggi conclusivi mirano altresì a fornire al lettore elementi chiave del retroterra storiografico dei dibattiti e delle controversie in corso sulle relazioni indo-britanniche, focalizzandosi sul contributo e sull’evoluzione della cosiddetta “Scuola di Cambridge” di storia coloniale e globale.

This Open Access book explores heritage conservation ethics of post conflict and provides an important historical record of the possible reconstruction of the Bamiyan Buddha statues, which was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in Danger in 2003 as “Cultural Landscape and Archaeological Remains of the Bamiyan Valley”. With the condition that most surface of the original fragments of the Buddha statues were lost due to acts of deliberate destruction, this publication explores a reference point for conservation practitioners and policy makers around the world as they consider how to respond to on-going acts of destruction of cultural heritage. Whilst there has been an emerging debate to the ethics and nature of heritage reconstruction, this volume provides a plethora of ideas and approaches concerning the future treatment of the Bamiyan Buddha statues. It also addresses a number of fundamental questions on potential heritage reconstruction: how it will be done; who will decide; and what it should be done for. Moreover when it comes to the inscribed World Heritage properties, how can reconstructed heritage using non-original materials be considered to retain authenticity? Museums are among the iconic buildings of the twenty-first century, as remarkable for their architectural diversity as for the variety of collections they display. But how does the architecture of museums affect our experience as visitors? This book proposes that by seeing space as common ground between architecture and museology, and so between the museum building and its display, we can illuminate the individuality of each museum and the distinctive experience it offers - for example, how some museums create a sense of personal exploration, while others are more intensely didactic, and how the visit in some cases is transformed into a spatial experience and in other cases into a more social event. This volume explores how Gibraltarian Britishness was constructed over the course of the twentieth century. Today most Gibraltarians are fiercely proud of their Britishness, sometimes even describing themselves as ‘more British than the British’ and Gibraltar’s Chief Minister in 2018 announced in a radio interview that “We see the world through British eyes.” Yet well beyond the mid-twentieth century the inhabitants of the Rock were overwhelmingly Spanish speaking, had a high rate of intermarriage with Spaniards, and had strong class links and shared interests with their neighbours across the border. At the same time, Gibraltarians had a very clear secondary status with respect to UK British people. By the beginning of the twenty-first century, however, Gibraltarians speak more English than Spanish (with increasing English monolingualism), have full British citizenship and are no longer discriminated against based on their ethnicity; they see themselves as profoundly different culturally to Spanish people across the border. Bordering on Britishness explores and interrogates these changes and examines in depth the evolving relationship Gibraltarians have with Britishness. It also reflects on the profound changes Gibraltar is likely to experience because of Brexit when its border with Spain becomes an external EU border and the relative political strengths of Spain and the UK shift accordingly. If Gibraltarian Britishness has evolved in the past it is certain to evolve in the future and this volume raises the question of how this might change if the UK’s political and economic strength – especially with respect to Gibraltar – begins to wane.

In the last years of World War II, Friedrich Hayek wrote 'The Road to Serfdom'. He warned the Allies that policy proposals which were being canvassed for the post-war world ran the risk of destroying the very freedom for which they were fighting. On the basis of 'as in war, so in peace', economists and others were arguing that the government should plan all economic activity. Such planning, Hayek argued, would be incompatible with liberty, and had been at the very heart of the movements that had established both communism and Nazism. On its publication in 1944, the book caused a sensation. Neither its British nor its American publisher could keep up with demand, owing to wartime paper rationing. Then, in 1945, Reader's Digest published 'The Road to Serfdom' as the condensed book in its April edition. For the first and still the only time, the condensed book was placed at the front of the magazine instead of the back. Hayek found himself a celebrity, addressing a mass market. The condensed edition was republished for the first time by the IEA in 1999 and has been reissued to meet the continuing demand for its enduringly relevant and accessible message.
