Book Description
A unique 'autobiography'of one of the greatest storytellers of our times, Munshi Premchand, recreated from his works by the man regarded as 'Premchand's Boswell', Madan Gopal. Often compared to Gorky and Tolstoy, Premchand was not only a versatile writer of short stories, novels, dramas and essays, but also played an active role in the country's freedom movement. His stories took birth from the lives of the common people, their vicissitudes and deprivations, as well as their small joys and victories. Premchand rebelled against narrow religious bigotry and, in fighting it through his writing, he imbued a whole generation with the idea of a new social order of justice and equality. The author, Madan Gopal, has based his narrative on a study of almost everything of consequence written by or on Premchand in Hindi and Urdu, including numerous unpublished letters written by and to Premchand, which provide an intimate knowledge of the man, the writer, and the thinker. Madan Gopal's deep study of the writer whom he reveres has enabled him to tell the story of his life almost as the master storyteller would have told it himself. For all aficionados of Munshi Premchand, this is a book that must find a place on their shelves.

Book Description
This international Hindi classic by Munshi Premchand is the last book from the stable of this prolific and brilliant writer who continues to live in the hearts of Hindi lovers even nearly a century after his death. This book is widely acknowledged as Premchand’s best, and ranks among the top, in fact, is at the top, of novels that have enriched the world of Hindi literature. Completed in 1936, the year of his death, Godan depicts in telling detail the vicissitudes of rural life, the political upheavals of the early twentieth century, and how events and circumstances shaped the lives of people, city and rural. However, the emphasis is more on life in the villages and the problems villagers face and the misery that makes their lives a constant struggle for existence from birth to death. Much of the vagaries and vicissitudes of rural life outlined in, reflect much of what Premchand drew from his childhood and subsequent background. He was born and brought up in an insignificant village near Banaras, now Varanasi, and lived much of his life there. The characters he has depicted are mostly based on rural dwellers or those with rural backgrounds who later migrated to cities in search of livelihood. However, their hearts always remained in their villages because of the strong emotional bond that not many could forget.

Book Description
Postmodernism is a notoriously elusive concept and still the object of critical debates among scholars across a range of different disciplines. In literature, in particular, these debates are complicated by “postmodern” styles emanating from outside the concept’s Western origins. By analyzing contemporary Hindi novels, and drawing on both Western and Hindi literary criticism, "Postmodern Traces and Recent Hindi Novels" aims to understand some of the manifestations of postmodernism in contemporary Hindi fiction, including ways the latter might challenge the traditional parameters of postmodern literature. This book is essential reading for scholars and students specializing in South Asian studies and both postcolonial and comparative literature. It will also interest the general reader curious to know more about one of the less explored areas of world literature.
