"Lots of painters are obsessed with inventing something," American painter Joan Mitchell (1925-92) said in 1986. "When I was young, it never occurred to me to invent. All I wanted to do was paint." Throughout her life Mitchell remained committed to totally autonomous abstract painting, always driven by this fundamental love for the craft and technique of painting. In a career spanning more than four decades, Mitchell's painting style married the dynamic gesture of the Abstract Expressionists, her generational peers, to a keen sensitivity to natural phenomena such as light and water. Characterized by an intense color palette and fresh gestural energy, often applied on a very large scale, Mitchell's paintings both sensually seduce and intellectually stimulate viewers. Published to accompany a large-scale survey of Mitchell's painting, Joan Mitchell: Retrospective draws from Mitchell's entire oeuvre, from her early work of the 1950s to her late, multipart works painted in her last years. Both catalogue and exhibition insist on the importance of biography to any retrospective account of Mitchell's work, and a large part of the exhibition is dedicated to the first extensive public presentation of archival materials from the Joan Mitchell Foundation. Born in Chicago in 1925, Joan Mitchell studied at Smith College before training at The Art Institute of Chicago. After a fellowship in Paris, Mitchell lived in New York, where she became part of the community of Abstract Expressionist painters. She spent increasing amounts of time in France, eventually moving to Paris in 1959, and remaining there until her death in 1992.

Sculptor, poet, diarist, graphic designer, pioneer artist's book maker, performer, publisher, musician, and, most of all, provocateur, Dieter Roth has long been beloved as an artist's artist. Known for his mistrust of all art institutions and commercial galleries--he once referred to museums as funeral homes--he was also known for his generosity to friends, his collaborative spirit, and for including his family in his art making. Much to the frustration of any gallery that tried to exhibit his work (supposedly none more than once), Roth thumbed his nose at those who valued high purpose and permanence in art. "The goal should be an understanding by all three parties: the wall, the architect and the painter", observed the French artist Fernand Léger (1881-1955) in 1933. His projects reveal a willingness to try out new things and demonstrate his striving to extend painting beyond the boundaries of the easel and to integrate it into the social, everyday space. They shed new light on one of the influential artists of the twentieth century. Fernand Léger, known for his Cubist paintings and his representational works of the mechanical period, was a trained architectural draughtsman who from the early 1920s until the end of his life made an intensive study of the interrelationships between painting and space. He was convinced that the social and psychological dimension in the use of colour contributed to a better integration of modern architecture into everyday life and human existence. In close dialogue with architects like Wallace K. Harrison and Le Corbusier he produced fascinating, often unexpectedly experimental and frequently abstract projects for houses, flats, churches, ships and world exhibitions.
