Book Description
This bilingual pair of books grew out of Muntadas' 2004-2005 exhibition at the Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen, “Muntadas Projects (1974-2004). On Translation: Spaces of Memory”. One book presents traditional catalogue essays, images of exhibited works and interviews, while the other - the “city guide” - documents a site specific project carried out by Muntadas in the city of Bremen during the exhibition. This project involved identifying and cataloging city buildings that had changed function over the past 100 years. A photograph of each building in the present is paired with a photograph of the same building in a former incarnation. Short texts, written in the style of guidebook descriptions, trace the buildings' histories without offering commentary, but the cumulative effect of seeing libraries, universities and apartment buildings replace police headquarters, barracks and bunkers is chilling. Even those building evolutions that don't overtly reference World War II effectively address the question posed by the artist in his introduction, “Should places erase memories?...of repression, crimes, torture...should the sight and awareness of disasters remain / be maintained?” Another project in this guide book documents various commodified representations the traditional Grimm's fairy tale “The Bremen Town Musicians”.

Between
Author: Muntadas
Publisher: ACTAR Publishers
ISBN: 8492861894
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 308
Book Description
Antoni Muntadas (*Barcelona, 1942) is one of the most important contemporary Spanish artists. His work addresses social, political and communications issues, the relationship between public and private space within social framework, and investigates channels of information and the ways they are used to promulgate ideas and control and censor information. Working in different media, such as photography, video, publications, Internet and multi-media installations, Muntadas often speaks about the condition of being "in between" as a point of departure for his work. This "between" can be characterized as a place of ambiguity outside specific sites or destinations. This two-volume publication is the catalogue of the retrospective exhibition that will be held at the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofi?a in Madrid in October 2011. The catalogue uses the same organizing principle as the Muntadas' exhibition that considers his oeuvre from the perspective of "constellations of space," with titles such as Micro Spaces, Power Spheres, The Construction of Fear or Translation Spaces. Each constellation is a comprehensive thematic unit of images, artist's writings as well as new and old texts by notable contributors from the field of contemporary art and theory. The second volume will contain a conversation between the director of the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofi?a, Manuel Borja-Villel, and Muntadas, plus documentary material from the installation at the Museum.

Space, Site, Intervention
Author: Erika Suderburg
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 9780816631599
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 392
Book Description
From Ferdinand Chevel's Palais Ideal (1879-1905) and Simon Rodia's Watts Towers (1921-1954) to Ant Farm's Cadillac Ranch (1974) and Richard Serra's Tilted Arc (1981), installation art has continually crossed boundaries, encompassing sculpture, architecture, performance, and visual art. Although unique in its power to transform both the site in which a work is constructed and the viewer's experience of being in a place, installation art has not received the critical attention accorded other art forms. In Space, Site, Intervention, some of today's most prominent art critics, curators, and artists view installation art as a diverse, multifaceted, and international art form that challenges institutional assumptions and narrow conceptual frameworks. The contributors discuss installation in relation to the genealogy of modern art, community and corporate space, multimedia cyberspace, public and private ritual, the gallery and the museum, public and private patronage, and political action. This ambitious volume focuses on issues of class, sexuality, cultural identity rase, and gender, and highlights a wide range of artists whose work is often marginalized by mainstream art history and criticism. Together, the essays in Space, Site, Intervention investigate how installation resonates within modern culture and society, as well as its ongoing influence on contemporary visual culture.

Aesthetics of Interaction in Digital Art
Author: Katja Kwastek
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262528290
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 381
Book Description
An art-historical perspective on interactive media art that provides theoretical and methodological tools for understanding and analyzing digital art. Since the 1960s, artworks that involve the participation of the spectator have received extensive scholarly attention. Yet interactive artworks using digital media still present a challenge for academic art history. In this book, Katja Kwastek argues that the particular aesthetic experience enabled by these new media works can open up new perspectives for our understanding of art and media alike. Kwastek, herself an art historian, offers a set of theoretical and methodological tools that are suitable for understanding and analyzing not only new media art but also other contemporary art forms. Addressing both the theoretician and the practitioner, Kwastek provides an introduction to the history and the terminology of interactive art, a theory of the aesthetics of interaction, and exemplary case studies of interactive media art. Kwastek lays the historical and theoretical groundwork and then develops an aesthetics of interaction, discussing such aspects as real space and data space, temporal structures, instrumental and phenomenal perspectives, and the relationship between materiality and interpretability. Finally, she applies her theory to specific works of interactive media art, including narratives in virtual and real space, interactive installations, and performance—with case studies of works by Olia Lialina, Susanne Berkenheger, Stefan Schemat, Teri Rueb, Lynn Hershman, Agnes Hegedüs, Tmema, David Rokeby, Sonia Cillari, and Blast Theory.

Book Description
Digital art challenges archiving, collecting and preserving methods within and outside of gallery, library, archive and museum (GLAM) institutions. This book brings together leading international experts from digital art theory and preservation, digital humanities, collection management, conservation and media art histories. In a transdisciplinary approach, theoretic and practice-based research from these stakeholders in art, research, education and exhibition are presented to create an overview of present preservation methods and discuss demands and opportunities for the future.
