Selected Letters of Marianne Moore
Author: Marianne Moore
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 9780141181202
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 628
Book Description
Marianne Moore's correspondence makes up the largest and most broadly significant collection of any modern poet. It documents the first two-thirds of this century, reflecting shifts from Victorian to modernist culture, the experience of the two world wars, the Depression and postwar prosperity, and the changing face of the arts in America and Europe. Moore wrote letters daily for most of her life—long, intense letters to friends and family; shorter, but always distinctive letters to an ever-widening circle of acquaintances and fans. At the height of her celebrity, she would occasionally write as many as fifty letters a day. Both Moore and her correspondents appreciated the value of their exchange, so that an extraordinary number of letters, approximately thirty thousand, have been preserved. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Boss Mouse
Author: Dennis W. Chowen
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1420890786
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 126
Book Description
Boss Mouse is the self-appointed leader of a colony of mice. In conducting meetings, Boss Mouse uses a secret formula for his six whiskers and a thorough, meticulous brushing to precisely position every hair on his thick fur coat. This story is about a mouse who leads the entire colony of mice from its familiar burrow to a new land of safety. In order for them to find their way, it was necessary to find a map that was on the stomach of a turtle. The problems become how to know which turtle it is and how to read the map to find the directions! They encounter several animals and birds who help them. Their leader, Boss Mouse, provides the guidance and the wisdom for the colony to avoid trouble and danger, even though he, with the help of Mrs. Mouse, has to keep track of their mischievous son, Miffit, who is always more interested in playing games, having fun and eating than he is in helping the colony. Miffit just seems to be in and out of trouble most of the time. He is whisked up by a whirlwind while he is eating seeds inside of a can and lands in a strange place where he is under the bad influence of some strange talking mice and has to deal with rejection and fear. Miffit meets a young, nice friend, Andshe, and they begin their journey back to the colony and its safety. They proceed to find a way to send messages via reflections on a mica rock, sent there using her nails to make a special code that only Boss Mouse is able to decipher. Boss Mouse arranges for the homecoming and a happy ending for Miffit and Andshe as they start their life new together.

Genetics of the Mouse
Author: Jean Louis Guénet
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3662442876
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 417
Book Description
This book, written by experienced geneticists, covers topics ranging from the natural history of the mouse species, its handling and reproduction in the laboratory, and its classical genetics and cytogenetics, to modern issues including the analysis of the transcriptome, the parental imprinting and X-chromosome inactivation. The strategies for creating all sorts of mutations, either by genetic engineering or by using mutagens, are also reviewed and discussed in detail. Finally, a last chapter outlines the methodology used for the analysis of complex or quantitative traits. The authors also discuss the importance of accurate phenotyping, which is now performed in the mouse clinics established worldwide and identify the limits of the mouse model, which under certain circumstances can fail to present the phenotype expected from the cognate condition in the human model. For each chapter an up-to-date list of pertinent references is provided. In short, this book offers an essential resource for all scientists who use or plan to use mice in their research.
