Here the Commodore left him. Whatever might have been the inducement held out to him to take such a step, the Emir Bechir visited Alexandria in the spring of 1800. The friendship, however, of Sir Sidney Smith, to which he fondly looked as the means of retrieving his fortunes, was still destined to be barren of any useful results; and, at length, wearied of wandering from place to place, he was fain to return once more to his native mountains.
