Self Expressions
Author: Owen J. Flanagan
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0195096967
Category : Ego (Psychology)
Languages : en
Pages : 237
Book Description
Human beings have the unique ability to consciously reflect on the nature of the self. But reflection has its costs. We can ask what the self is, but as David Hume pointed out, the self, once reflected upon, may be nowhere to be found. The favored view is that we are material beings living in the material world. But if so, a host of destabilizing questions surface. If persons are just a sophisticated sort of animal, then what sense is there to the idea that we are free agents who control our own destinies? What makes the life of any animal, even one as sophisticated as Homo sapiens, worth anything? What place is there in a material world for God? And if there is no place for a God, then what hold can morality possibly have on us--why isn't everything allowed? Flanagan's collection of essays takes on these questions and more. He continues the old philosophical project of reconciling a scientific view of ourselves with a view of ourselves as agents of free will and meaning-makers. But to this project he brings the latest insights of neuroscience, cognitive science, and psychiatry, exploring topics such as whether the conscious mind can be explained scientifically, whether dreams are self-expressive or just noise, the moral socialization of children, and the nature of psychological phenomena such as multiple personality disorder and false memory syndrome. What emerges from these explorations is a liberating vision which can make sense of the self, agency, character transformation, and the value and worth of human life. Flanagan concludes that nothing about a scientific view of persons must lead to nihilism.

Data Loam
Author: Johnny Golding
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 311069784X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 496
Book Description
As a reaction to the dominant effect and interpretive authority of the digital, Data Loam combines radical approaches based on positions taken in the international practice of contemporary art. Previously: insistence on indexicality and the instrumental reduction of knowledge. Instead: a new metric that requires play, curiosity, experiment, and risk. As an urgent response to the continually growing flood of information that libraries, search engines, and cultural institutions are exposed to, the authors develop approaches that suggest and permit sensual logic, causal permeability, and new forms of man–machine interaction. Data Loam focuses on the future of knowledge systems in texts about artificial intelligence, cybernetics, and cryptoeconomics – as a means of counteracting end-of-the-world fears.

A Critical Investigation into Precognitive Dreams
Author: Paul Kiritsis
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527547167
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 170
Book Description
The precognitive dream is a compelling, real-world phenomenon that still stands outside the purview of orthodox science. It is spoken about anecdotally and has been alluded to time and time again by renowned psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, and other clinicians expounding upon the nature of their patients’ narratives. However, it receives no empirical airtime because it is incommensurable with conventional explanations of human consciousness like the embodied mind hypothesis and with unconscious philosophical attitudes espoused by disciples of an ostensibly irrevocable Cartesian-Kantian account of the cosmos. This volume examines precognitive dream experiences, offering a comprehensive source of integrated information pertaining to their history and overarching features, their potential neural underpinnings, and the implications for consciousness and competing philosophical theories of determinism and non-determinism. It will serve as a useful reference for both researchers and clinicians hoping to gain insight into an age-old, sublime phenomenon.

Logistics of Dreaming
Author: Jerry Nelson
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595354025
Category : Dream interpretation
Languages : en
Pages : 154
Book Description
Mother Nature is in the business of writing software programs in DNA. Dreaming is our software program, and it is also how early Homo sapiens learned logic and the use of tools. Author Jerry DC Nelson is neither a scientist, a doctor, nor a physiologist-just an engineer with a bottomless thirst for details on how everything works. When some of his dreams became intriguing, Nelson began to wonder why we dream. What makes us dream, and how do we dream? During Nelson's search for answers, he interviewed friends, read books and articles on the dreaming brain, and watched television programs pertaining to the functions of the brain. In all his research, he never found any satisfactory answers to the question of why we have these wonderful, unique, strange, and bizarre dreams. Then, after recording hundreds of dreams, he started to see particular patterns emerging, which lead him to formulate several theories. When Mother Nature was worked into the equation, everything fell into place. After having recorded more than 4,000 dreams and conducted many years of research, Nelson is confident that he has enough detailed information to back up his theories on why we dream. Logistics of Dreaming is his way of sharing some of Mother Nature's brilliancies concerning the dreaming brain.
