Book Description
This book demonstrates that we need not choose between seeing so-called Presocratic thinkers as rational philosophers or as religious sages. In particular, it rethinks fundamentally the emergence of systematic epistemology and reflection on speculative inquiry in Hesiod, Xenophanes and Parmenides. Shaul Tor argues that different forms of reasoning, and different models of divine disclosure, play equally integral, harmonious and mutually illuminating roles in early Greek epistemology. Throughout, the book relates these thinkers to their religious, literary and historical surroundings. It is thus also, and inseparably, a study of poetic inspiration, divination, mystery initiation, metempsychosis and other early Greek attitudes to the relations and interactions between mortal and divine. The engagements of early philosophers with such religious attitudes present us with complex combinations of criticisms and creative appropriations. Indeed, the early milestones of philosophical epistemology studied here themselves reflect an essentially theological enterprise and, as such, one aspect of Greek religion.

Book Description
In the times before time, a great and glorious kingdom named Urbanus once existed. Urbanus: The Kingdom Chronicles is an epic parable recounting the historical conflict between invisible and universal forces that perpetually contend for the hearts and minds of men. The people of Urbanus were compelled to choose between liberty and tyranny and ultimately life and death. The uniqueness of the characters in the story testifies to the reality that those who cannot rule themselves will be ruled by tyrants. The larger-than-life cast of characters in this multidimensional epic include Abner the Seer, messenger of King Salem; Wain of Lair, captain of the Northern Rangers; his brother, Lothair, lieutenant of the rangers; their ranger cohorts: the Brothers Fairn, the Men of Invar, and Lon of Mark; Macoot, the elusive chieftain of the Toon; Jurius Hanner, guardian of the Jasper Stone and grandfather of Daylin Hanner, a young daydreamer who is the chosen instrument of King Salem; Souteneur, the notorious godfather of crime and corruption of the underworld of Urbanus. They represent the forces of light. Sanballat, the evil emir of the Southern Kingdom along with a complex host of supporting personalities and creatures represent the forces of darkness.

Book Description
Civic Rites explores the religious origins of Western democracy by examining the government of fifth-century BCE Athens in the larger context of ancient Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. Deftly combining history, politics, and religion to weave together stories of democracy’s first leaders and critics, Nancy Evans gives readers a contemporary’s perspective on Athenian society. She vividly depicts the physical environment and the ancestral rituals that nourished the people of the earliest democratic state, demonstrating how religious concerns were embedded in Athenian governmental processes. The book’s lucid portrayals of the best-known Athenian festivals—honoring Athena, Demeter, and Dionysus—offer a balanced view of Athenian ritual and illustrate the range of such customs in fifth-century Athens.
