Book Description
More than 100 years of images that reveal the changing face of a city and its inhabitants. This commemorative book shows Montrealers, from the beginnings of photography through to 1976, in images that capture the fragility of a moment, fleeting, yet frozen in time. Through hundreds of snapshots, this book reveals the face of an entire social world. Some photos are the work of masters of photography such as Robert Notman, Henri Cartier-Bresson, John Max, Alain Chagnon, Yousuf Karsh and many more. Others were taken by more or less everyday photographers, generally unaware that they were providing future generations with an invaluable glimpse of humanity and a fragment of eternity. These photographs are accompanied by commentary on the photographer’s work, if one exists, and on fascinating characteristics of the world they unveil to us. The photos are grouped under different themes: housing, culture, streets, religion, work, transportation, First Nations and more. This wholly unique book contains more than 400 original photographs, many previously unpublished or unknown.

Book Description
This volume offers a synthetic approach to language variation and language ideologies in multilingual communities. Although the vast majority of the world’s speech communities are multilingual, much of sociolinguistics ignores this internal diversity. This volume fills this gap, investigating social and linguistic dimensions of variation and change in multilingual communities. Drawing on research in a wide range of countries (Canada, USA, South Africa, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu), it explores: connections between the fields of creolistics, language/dialect contact, and language acquisition; how the study of variation and change, particularly in cases of additive bilingualism, is central to understanding social and linguistic issues in multilingual communities; how changing language ideologies and changing demographics influence language choice and/or language policy, and the pivotal place of multilingualism in enacting social power and authority, and a rich array of new empirical findings on the dynamics of multilingual speech communities.

Book Description
Separatist madness engulfs Quebec in this saga of a society torn asunder by French-Canadian nationalists hellbent on Quebec's secession from Canada. It might be described as a historical/political metaphor, a cautionary tale, recounting some of the momentous events which have occurred in the Province of Quebec between the late 50s and present day. The story also dips back into the 30s and 40s.

Book Description
In the decades following the Second World War, women from all walks of life became increasingly frustrated by the world around them. Drawing on long-standing political traditions, these women bound together to revolutionize social norms and contest gender inequality. In Montreal, women activists inspired by Red Power, Black Power, and Quebec liberation, among other social movements, mounted a multifront campaign against social injustice. Countercurrents looks beyond the defining waves metaphor to write a new history of feminism that incorporates parallel social movements into the overarching narrative of the women’s movement. Case studies compare and reflect on the histories of the Quebec Native Women’s Association, the Congress of Black Women, the Front de libération des femmes du Québec, various Haitian women’s organizations, and the Collectif des femmes immigrantes du Québec and the political work they did. Bringing to light previously overlooked archival and oral sources, Amanda Ricci introduces a new cast of characters to the history of feminism in Quebec. The book presents a unique portrait of the resurgence of feminist activism, demonstrating its deep roots in Indigenous and Black communities, its transnational scope, and its wide-ranging inspirations and preoccupations. Advancing cross‐cultural perspectives on women’s movements, Countercurrents looks to the history of women’s activism in Montreal and finds new ways of defining feminist priorities and imagining feminist futures.
