Book Description
This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book Description
Water Quality Monitoring and Management: Basis, Technology and Case Studies presents recent innovations in operations management for water quality monitoring. It highlights the cost of using and choosing smart sensors with advanced engineering approaches that have been applied in water quality monitoring management, including area coverage planning and sequential scheduling. In parallel, the book covers newly introduced technologies like bulk data handling techniques, IoT of agriculture, and compliance with environmental considerations. Presented from a system engineering perspective, the book includes aspects on advanced optimization, system and platform, Wireless Sensor Network, selection of river water quality, groundwater quality detection, and more. It will be an ideal resource for students, researchers and those working daily in agriculture who must maintain acceptable water quality. - Discusses field operations research and application in water science - Includes detection methods and case analysis for water quality management - Encompasses rivers, lakes, seas and groundwater - Covers water for agriculture, aquaculture, drinking and industrial uses

Book Description
The European Water Framework Directive forms the basic legislation for the protection of the European aquatic environment. The Groundwater Directive (GD) was adopted in 2006 to supplement the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and to deal with the specific questions of groundwater quality and to ensure good status of groundwater. At the same time there is still a poor perception of the importance of groundwater by many people involved in civic management and public policy. Against this background a consortium of European scientists conducted detailed studies of water quality in Europe, focusing on the natural baseline quality of groundwater as the basis for understanding geochemical processes in aquifers, and providing a framework for defining what constitutes pollution. This text is the result of these important studies, and constitutes a key reference on natural water quality of aquifers. It presents a series of thematic chapters together with chapters on representative groundwater systems in Europe which illustrate the main processes and evolution of water quality.

Book Description
Engineers and applied geophysicists routinely encounter interpolation and estimation problems when analysing data from field observations. Introduction to Geostatistics presents practical techniques for the estimation of spatial functions from sparse data. The author's unique approach is a synthesis of classic and geostatistical methods with a focus on the most practical linear minimum-variance estimation methods, and includes suggestions on how to test and extend the applicability of such methods. The author includes many useful methods (often not covered in other geostatistics books) such as estimating variogram parameters, evaluating the need for a variable mean, parameter estimation and model testing in complex cases (e.g. anisotropy, variable mean, and multiple variables), and using information from deterministic mathematical models. Well illustrated with exercises and worked examples taken from hydrogeology, Introduction to Geostatistics assumes no background in statistics and is suitable for graduate-level courses in earth sciences, hydrology, and environmental engineering, and also for self-study.
