Book Description
Molecular Structure and Energetics Volume 1 Edited by Joel F. Liebman Arthur Greenberg This series has as its theme two of the most widespread, fundamental and important concepts in chemistry: molecular structure and energetics. The scope of the series ranges from species as elegantly simple as elemental boron and carbon to those as ill-defined, yet important, as atmospheric particulates; from rearrangements in clusters to the strain and aromaticity of organic molecules; from the energies of protonation of atoms and diatomic molecules to the binding of substrates to natural and synthetic enzymes. Each volume consists of chapters by leading specialists, and is focused on a common theme. Each essay provides a tutorial review which is generally in a form that blends theory and experiment as well as rigor and intuition. Volume 1, Chemical Bonding Molecules, examines nine topics in the fundamental, conceptual and theoretical framework of molecular structure and energetics. All the essays explicitly compare and interweave findings from experiment and from both calculational and qualitative theory.

Book Description
This is the perfect complement to "Chemical Bonding - Across the Periodic Table" by the same editors, who are two of the top scientists working on this topic, each with extensive experience and important connections within the community. The resulting book is a unique overview of the different approaches used for describing a chemical bond, including molecular-orbital based, valence-bond based, ELF, AIM and density-functional based methods. It takes into account the many developments that have taken place in the field over the past few decades due to the rapid advances in quantum chemical models and faster computers.

Book Description
A readable little book assisting the student in understanding, in a nonmathematical way, the essentials of the different bonds occurring in chemistry. Starting with a short, self-contained,introduction, Chapter 1 presents the essential elements of the variation approach to either total or second-order molecular energies, the system of atomic units (au) necessary to simplify all mathematical expressions, and an introductory description of the electron distribution in molecules. Using mostly 2x2 Hückel secular equations, Chapter 2, by far the largest part of the book because of the many implications of the chemical bond, introduces a model of bonding in homonuclear and heteronuclear diatomics, multiple and delocalized bonds in hydrocarbons, and the stereochemistry of chemical bonds in polyatomic molecules, in a word, a model of the strong first-order interactions originating the chemical bond. In Chapter 3 the Hückel model of the linear polyene chain is used to explain the origin of band structure in the 1-dimensional crystal. Chapter 4 deals with a simple two-state model of weak interactions, introducing the reader to understand second-order electric properties of molecules and VdW bonding between closed shells. Lastly, Chapter 5 studies the structure of H-bonded dimers and the nature of the hydrogen bond, which has a strength intermediate between a VdW bond and a weak chemical bond. Besides a qualitative MO approach based on HOMO-LUMO charge transfer from an electron donor to an electron acceptor molecule, a quantitative electrostatic approach is presented yielding an electrostatic model working even at its simplest pictorial level. A list of alphabetically ordered references, author and subject indices complete the book.

Book Description
Modern Models of Bonding and Delocalization Edited by Joel F. Liebman Arthur Greenberg In addition to describing modern views of bonding and delocalization, this volume presents the ways in which these have been deduced. For example, qualitative pictures of small rings often include the competing and now classic concepts of strain and aromaticity. Quantitative quantum chemical calculations provide topological views of molecular electron density, which in turn yield new descriptions and related insights.

Book Description
Structure and Bonding covers introductory atomic and molecular theory as given in first and second year undergraduate courses at university level. This book explains in non-mathematical terms where possible, the factors that govern covalent bond formation, the lengths and strengths of bonds and molecular shapes. Throughout the book, theoretical concepts and experimental evidence are integrated. An introductory chapter summarizes the principles on which the Periodic Table is established, and describes the periodicity of various atomic properties which are relevant to chemical bonding. Symmetry and group theory are introduced to serve as the basis of all molecular orbital treatments of molecules. This basis is then applied to a variety of covalent molecules with discussions of bond lengths and angles and hence molecular shapes. Extensive comparisons of valence bond theory and VSEPR theory with molecular orbital theory are included. Metallic bonding is related to electrical conduction and semi-conduction. The energetics of ionic bond formation and the transition from ionic to covalent bonding is also covered. Ideal for the needs of undergraduate chemistry students, Tutorial Chemistry Texts is a major series consisting of short, single topic or modular texts concentrating on the fundamental areas of chemistry taught in undergraduate science courses. Each book provides a concise account of the basic principles underlying a given subject, embodying an independent-learning philosophy and including worked examples.
