Book Description
One of the great challenges that many participants in foreign exchange (FX) markets face is sifting through the often overwhelming amount of information that is available. Media outlets stream updates on international politics, economics, and other factors that move FX prices twenty-four hours a day. It is difficult to work out what is and what is not important. This book helps its reader overcome these challenges by combining the insights gained from a market practitioner who has traded FX at Goldman Sachs, PIMCO, and Barclays Investment Bank, with textbook-level modern financial macroeconomic theory. The book covers macroeconomics relating to exchange rate determination. While you could obtain this information from a disparate set of sources―textbooks, academic literature, industry research notes, conversations with other market practitioners, and theories cited in media reports―this book brings all of these sources together to translate the information into concrete FX views that are firmly rooted in the macroeconomic theory of risk premiums, interest rates, and inflation, among other topics. The book promotes time consistent thought that avoids the daily temptation to jump from that day’s economic narrative to the next. Of particular interest to buy- and sell-side industry practitioners, finance and economics graduate students, academics, and others interested in FX markets, this book teaches its readers how to do this and improve their own trading and understanding of the FX markets.

Book Description
Praise for Foreign Exchange "Tim Weithers starts by telling the reader that foreign exchange is not difficult, just confusing, but Foreign Exchange: A Practical Guide to the FX Markets proves that money is much more exciting than anything it buys. This useful book is a whirlwind tour of the world's largest market, and the tour guide is an expert storyteller, inserting numerous fascinating insights and quirky facts throughout the book." -John R. Taylor, Chairman, CEO and CIO, FX Concepts "The book reflects the author's doctorate from the University of Chicago, several years' experience as an economics professor, and, most recently, a very successful decade as an executive at a huge international bank. These fundamental ingredients are seasoned with bits of wisdom and experience. What results is a very tasty intellectual stew." -Professor Jack Clark Francis, PhD, Professor of Economics and Finance, Bernard Baruch College "In this book, Tim Weithers clearly explains a very complicated subject. Foreign Exchange is full of jargon and conventions that make it very hard for non-professionals to gain a good understanding. Weither's book is a must for any student or professional who wants to learn the secrets of FX." -Niels O. Nygaard, Director of Financial Mathematics, The University of Chicago "An excellent text for students and practitioners who want to become acquainted with the arcane world of the foreign exchange market." -David DeRosa, PhD, founder, DeRosa Research and Trading, Inc., and Adjunct Professor of Finance, Yale School of Management "Tim Weithers provides a superb introduction to the arcana of foreign exchange markets. While primarily intended for practitioners, the book would be a valuable introduction for students with some knowledge of economics. The text is exceptionally clear with numeric examples and exercises that reinforce concepts. Frequent references are made to the economic theory behind the trading practices." -John F. O'Connell, Professor of Economics, College of the Holy Cross

Book Description
An analysis of the operation and consequences of exchange rate regimes in an era of increasing international interdependence. The exchange rate is sometimes called the most important price in a highly globalized world. A country's choice of its exchange rate regime, between government-managed fixed rates and market-determined floating rates has significant implications for monetary policy, trade, and macroeconomic outcomes, and is the subject of both academic and policy debate. In this book, two leading economists examine the operation and consequences of exchange rate regimes in an era of increasing international interdependence. Michael Klein and Jay Shambaugh focus on the evolution of exchange rate regimes in the modern era, the period since 1973, which followed the Bretton Woods era of 1945–72 and the pre-World War I gold standard era. Klein and Shambaugh offer a comprehensive, integrated treatment of the characteristics of exchange rate regimes and their effects. The book draws on and synthesizes data from the recent wave of empirical research on this topic, and includes new findings that challenge preconceived notions.

Book Description
The foreign exchange market is huge, fascinating and yet widely misunderstood by participants and non-participants alike. This is because its unanswered questions are numerous. For instance, what is the purpose of the $4 trillion per day trading volume? What determines currency trends and who are the players in the FX arena? Does FX drive other financial markets, or is it the passive end-product of all the other markets? FX is without clear supply and demand factors, so how do traders determine sentiment and price direction? Much is written in an effort to answer these questions, but a lot of it is just noise. In the 12 pieces here, Barbara Rockefeller and Vicki Schmelzer draw on their combined 50 years' experience in foreign exchange to cut through the clutter and provide an elegant and razor-sharp look at this market. Their analysis is accurate, useful and enlivened by many anecdotes and examples from historic market events. They cover: - How the matrix concept can help observers understand foreign exchange market action - What professional FX traders take into consideration before entering into positions - Whether the FX market can be forecast - The interplay between foreign exchange and other financial markets - How technology has levelled the playing field between big and small players, and at what cost - Whether the prospect of reserve currency diversification away from the dollar is likely - The toolkit that central banks use to manage national economies and the effect of this on currencies 'The Foreign Exchange Matrix' is the go-to book for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the world of foreign exchange.

Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Foreign Exchange: Monetary Systems, Intrinsic Equivalents, and Commercial Rates of Exchange, of All Countries and Their Relation to United States Money The first edition of this book appeared a few months before the European War disturbed the entire financial structure of the world. Since then very few technical changes have been made in the monetary systems. Only four countries, China, Colombia, Salvador, and Turkey, have put in operation new laws relating to money. In this edition they are mentioned accordingly. During the war several countries have issued different forms of subsidiary money to cover local needs of circulation. Iron, zinc, and aluminum coins have been issued in some of the belligerent and even in some neutral countries. Also other tokens printed on paper and cloth. All have more or less served their purpose for the time being and are supposed to be redeemed hi current money as soon as conditions become normal. They have not changed in the least the technical conditions of money in any country nor have they had any influence on their foreign exchanges. They will serve more as a good supply of specimens for numismatists and collectors of curiosities. The great change, however, that the world has experienced is not so much technical as practical.
