Book Description
Modern Developments in the Mechanics of Continua presents the proceedings of the International Conference on Rheology, held in Pinebrook, New York, on August 23–27, 1965. This book promotes the national and international interest in mechanics of continua. Comprised of 16 chapters, this compilation of papers starts with an overview of the fundamental aspects of thermodynamics. This text then examines the divergence between the molecular theory of liquids and continuum mechanics. Other chapters explore the theory of the activation volume of liquids and the potential applications in rheology. This book discusses as well the characteristics of shear wave propagation, which are related to the viscoelastic properties of the supporting medium. The final chapter deals with the study of diffusion of benzoic acid at constant temperature into kaolinite slurries of changing concentrations. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, biophysicists, mathematicians, and engineers interested in the mechanics of continua.

Book Description
This revised, updated edition provides a comprehensive and rigorous description of the application of Hamilton’s principle to continuous media. To introduce terminology and initial concepts, it begins with what is called the first problem of the calculus of variations. For both historical and pedagogical reasons, it first discusses the application of the principle to systems of particles, including conservative and non-conservative systems and systems with constraints. The foundations of mechanics of continua are introduced in the context of inner product spaces. With this basis, the application of Hamilton’s principle to the classical theories of fluid and solid mechanics are covered. Then recent developments are described, including materials with microstructure, mixtures, and continua with singular surfaces.

Book Description
The mechanics of electromagnetic materials and structures has been developing rapidly with extensive applications in, e. g. , electronics industry, nuclear engineering, and smart materials and structures. Researchers in this interdisciplinary field are with diverse background and motivation. The Symposium on the Mechanics of Electromagnetic Materials and Structures of the Fourth International Conference on Nonlinear Mechanics in Shanghai, China in August 13-16, 2002 provided an opportunity for an intimate gathering of researchers and exchange of ideas. This volume contains papers based on most of the presentations at the symposium, and articles from a few invited contributors. These papers reflect some of the recent activities in the mechanics of electromagnetic materials and structures. The first twelve papers are in the order in which they were listed in the program of the conference. These are followed by six invited papers in alphabetical order of the last names of the first authors. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Professor David Y. Gao of Virginia Tech for suggesting the symposium, and to the authors for their time and effort invested in preparing their manuscripts. We are also grateful to Professor Daining Fang of Tsinghua University for co-chairing the symposium with J. S. Yang. Our special thanks belong to Kluwer for preparing this book for publication. J. S. Book Description
Tremendous advances in computer technologies and methods have precipitated a great demand for refinements in the constitutive models of plasticity. Such refinements include the development of a model that would account for material anisotropy and produces results that compare well with experimental data. Key to developing such models-and to meeting many other challenges in the field- is a firm grasp of the principles of continuum mechanics and how they apply to the formulation of plasticity theory. Also critical is understanding the experimental aspects of plasticity and material anisotropy. Integrating the traditionally separate subjects of continuum mechanics and plasticity, this book builds understanding in all of those areas. Part I provides systematic, comprehensive coverage of continuum mechanics, from a review of Carteisian tensors to the relevant conservation laws and constitutive equation. Part II offers an exhaustive presentation of the continuum theory of plasticity. This includes a unique treatment of the experimental aspects of plasticity, covers anisotropic plasticity, and incorporates recent research results related to the endochronic theory of plasticity obtained by the author and his colleagues. By bringing all of these together in one book, Continuum Mechanics and Plasticity facilitates the learning of solid mechanics. Its readers will be well prepared for pursuing either research related to the mechanical behavior of engineering materials or developmental work in engineering analysis and design.

Book Description
Including previously unpublished, original research material, this comprehensive book analyses topics of fundamental importance in theoretical fluid mechanics. The five papers appearing in this volume are centred around the mathematical theory of the Navier-Stokes equations (incompressible and compressible) and certain selected non-Newtonian modifications.
