Book Description
The complex relationships between alcohol use and human health represent an area of increasing interest to specialists interested in preventive cardiology. The inverse relationship between alcohol consumption and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, especially myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, has in fact gained sound scientific support in recent years. This book, based in an international symposium on the topic held in Venice, October 30-31, 1999, analyzes in depth the epidemiological association between alcohol consumption and human diseases and discusses the possible mechanisms involved in alcohol-associated protection from atherosclerotic diseases. The oxidative effects of different amounts of alcohol intake and of various alcoholic beverages in the production of these effects - subjects of considerable debate - are also analyzed. This book will be of interest to clinicians and researchers active in the areas of atherosclerosis, public health, preventive medicine, and preventive cardiology. It is intended to specifically help practising clinicians provide their patients with evidence-based answers to the most commonly asked questions regarding alcohol use.

Book Description
Both timely and topical, this book examines the most important aspects of the relationship between alcohol consumption and health. Drawing together much new and exciting work in this area, it reviews this emotive subject from a dispassionate perspective. It will provide a firm base for further research into the effects of alcohol on the cardiovascular system, and into public health attitudes to what is both a universal pleasure and problem.

Abstract: Objective: The review aims to evaluate associations of occasional and moderate drinking with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), specifically to compare results for occasional and moderate drinking, as moderate drinking is widely investigated while occasional drinking is relatively understudied and can potentially inform whether alcohol is causally related to CVD. Methods: A systematic review was conducted by searching for observational and interventional studies from three databases (ScienceDirect, Ebscohost, and PubMed) for alcohol consumption and its association with cardiovascular health. Online internet sources were also used for more supplementary research in this literature review. Patient-oriented outcomes, primarily on heart diseases, including cardiovascular heart disease, myocardial infarction, and coronary heart disease, were extracted from all study groups. Results: Fifteen studies were included, most of which were conducted in the United States of America (9 studies). Generally, moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a reduction in CVD risks, including extensive coronary calcification, sudden cardiac death, congestive heart failure, acute coronary syndrome, ischemic heart disease. Studies also suggests that alcohol may be associated with better endothelial function and lower systolic blood pressure Current occasional alcohol use is found to be associated lower IHD mortality in men, but is not related to IHD mortality in women. Conclusion: We found consistent evidence of protective association of moderate alcohol consumption against cardio-mortality and CVD, while occasional alcohol consumption has relatively less protection against CHD deaths. Such associations were only found in studies with living controls. Only a small number of studies have studied occasional drinking, in relation to cardiovascular health. Further studies that specifically examine occasional drinking, are needed. If the biological effects of occasional drinking towards CVD are limited, then occasional drinking may indicate the magnitude of residual and unobserved confounding in the association with cardiovascular health. This will in turn inform alcohol-related policies such as alcohol duties and minimum alcohol pricing. Drinking alcohol within "sensible" limits does not create significant cardiovascular risks; it even seems to offer some protection against coronary heart disease in middle aged men. en

Book Description
This volume, based on presentations from the symposium on the health effects of alcohol held in Titisee, Germany, examines the physical and psychological consequences of alcohol use and abuse, and considers environmental and ethnic factors that lead to addiction and dependence. Discusses epidemiological studies that show the influence of light to moderate intake of alcoholic beverages on coronary heart disease. Featuring contributions from nearly 60 internationally recognized and respected authors, and over 2900 references for further investigation of the subject, Alcohol in Health and Disease analyzes biochemical, pharmacogenetic, and pathologic disturbances that follow acute and chronic ingestion of alcohol; describes complications that arise from social, biological, and environmental factors; examines alcohol metabolic genes and their role in alcohol sensitivity, drinking habits, and dependence; spotlights hepatic and nutritional disorders associated with alcoholism; considers the relationship of alcohol to cancer; debates the French paradox and more. Covering a multitude of disciplines, including molecular biochemistry, genetics, epidemiology, pathophysiology, neurobiology, and cardiology, Alcohol in Health and Disease is a critical reference for addiction psychiatrists, neuropsychopharmacologists, psychologists, geneticists, toxicologists, biochemists, environmental and public health scientists, health policy makers, social workers, counselors, and graduate and medical school students in these disciplines.

The report provides an overview of alcohol consumption and harms in relation to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Chapter 1) presents global strategies action plans and monitoring frameworks (Chapter 2) gives detailed information on: the consumption of alcohol in populations (Chapter 3); the health consequences of alcohol consumption (Chapter 4); and policy responses at national level (Chapter 5). In its final chapter 6 the imperative for reducing harmful use of alcohol in a public health perspective is presented. In addition the report contains country profiles for WHO Member States and appendices with statistical annexes a description of the data sources and methods used to produce the estimates and references.
