The goal of this thesis is to develop a capability to simulate naval anti-air warfare (AAW) systems at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). Students in many curricula at NPS can use such a model in thesis research or course work related to air defense. Examples of courses in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics in which there is a use for AAW simulation are AE3705 Air Defense Lethality and AE3251 Aircraft Combat Survivability . The Extended Air Defense Simulation (EADSIM) was selected as the model to acquire and install on the Silicon Graphics computer workstations of the Computer Center Visualization Laboratory. EADSIM was developed by Teledyne Brown Engineering for the U.S. Army Space and Strategic Defense Command and is a powerful analysis tool that can model many aspects of air warfare. The author has used EADSIM to develop AAW and Strike Warfare scenarios for use in AE3705 and AE3251. These scenarios required the creation and modification of platforms within the graphical user interface to simulate naval units. These scenarios can be run and displayed as animated playback files for analysis. In addition, the EADSIM weapon performance model was studied. The default values for weapon systems probability of kill (Pk) were modified, and the results were examined to determine the overall effect of Pk within a simulation.

This report describes the use of two simulations, Extended Air Defense Simulation (EADSIM) and Theater Planning Tool (TPT), to predict the performance of the System Integration Test (SIT)-97. The System Integration Test (SIT)-97 is to be conducted along with the Willow Dune and Theater Missile Defense (TMD) Critical Measurements Program missile test programs. The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) is sponsoring this TMD Family of Systems live fire missile at the Kwajalein Missile Range. The purpose of the SIT is to conduct a series of interoperability experiments to demonstrate the capability to pass early warning information to TMD Active Defense forces and demonstrate the capability for TMD forces to share data among themselves. In addition, this SIT will establish policy and procedures for conducting future SITs.

This book contains the proceedings of an interna tional symposium devoted to Modeling and Analysis of Defense Processes in the context of land/air warfare. It was sponsored by Panel VII (on Defense Applications of Operational Research) of NATO's Defense Research Group (DRG) and took place 27-29 July 1982 at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Except perhaps for the Theater-Level Gaming and Analysis Workshop, sponsored by the Office of united 1 states Naval Research in 1977 , this symposium was the first international scientific meeting on Operations Research/Systems Analysis in the area of land/air war fare since the conference on Modeling Land Battle Systems 2 for Military Planning sponsored by NATO's Special Pro gramme Panel on Systems Science in 1974. That conference dealt primarily with modeling small unit (company, bat talion) engagements and, to a lesser extent, large unit (corps, theater) campaigns with principal emphasis on attrition processes and movement in combat. It was considered as rather successful in that it revealed the state-of-the art around 1972 and identified problem areas and promising approaches for future developments. lWith regard to foreign attendance, this wo- shop was largely limited to participants from the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany (see L.J. Low: Theater-Level Gaming and Analysis Workshop for Force Planning, Vol II-Summary, Discus sion of Issues and Requirements for Research, SRI Report, May, 1981).
