Book Description
A tasty oral history In 2018, Janis Thiessen, Kimberley Moore, and collaborator Kent Davies refashioned a used food truck into a mobile oral history lab. Together they embarked on a journey around Manitoba, gathering stories about the province’s food and the people who make, sell, and eat it. Along the way, they visited restaurant owners, beer brewers, grocers, farmers, scholars, and chefs in their kitchens and businesses, online, and on board the food truck. The team conducted nearly seventy interviews and indulged in a bounty of prairie delicacies, from Winnipeg’s “Fat Boys” to Steinbach’s perogies to Churchill’s cloudberry jam. Thiessen and Moore serve up the results of this research in mmm... Manitoba. Mixing recipes, maps, archival records, biographies, and full-colour photographs with fascinating stories, they showcase the province’s diverse food histories. Through the sharing and preparing of food, the authors investigate food security and regulation, Indigenous foodways and agriculture, capitalism’s impact on the agri-food industry, and the networks between Manitoban food producers and retailers. The book also explores the roles of gender, ethnicity, migration, and colonialism in Manitoba’s food history. Hop on the Manitoba Food History Truck and journey into the province’s past with engaging essays and easy-to-follow recipes for kjielkje and schmauntfat, snow goose tidbits, chicken karaage, the Salisbury House flapper pie, duck fat smashed potatoes, Ichi Ban cocktails, pork inihaw, and more. mmm... Manitoba offers a thoughtfully nuanced, deliciously digestible, and wholly unique regional history that is sure to satisfy.

Mixed-Member Electoral Systems in Constitutional Context
Author: Nathan F. Batto
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 0472900625
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 337
Book Description
Reformers have promoted mixed-member electoral systems as the “best of both worlds.” In this volume, internationally recognized political scientists evaluate the ways in which the introduction of a mixed-member electoral system affects the configuration of political parties. The contributors examine several political phenomena, including cabinet post allocation, nominations, preelectoral coalitions, split-ticket voting, and the size of party systems and faction systems. Significantly, they also consider various ways in which the constitutional system—especially whether the head of government is elected directly or indirectly—can modify the incentives created by the electoral system. The findings presented here demonstrate that the success of electoral reform depends not only on the specification of new electoral rules per se but also on the political context—and especially the constitutional framework—within which such rules are embedded.

A Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Growth
Author: John M.H. Buckler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447117212
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 440
Book Description
A Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Growth reports the findings of a longitudinal study of the growth of 200 schoolboys and 100 schoolgirls through the course of adolescence. As well as height and weight, about a dozen other physical measures were studied or related to each other and to the staging of sexual characteristics. These values are analysed according to both the chronological age and age based on a common pubertal characteristic of peak height velocity. The range of magnitude and timing of pubertal events is described and compared for boys and girls. These recent data are compared with previous European and North American longitudinal studies, notably those of Tanner conducted over 20 years ago. In addition new information is provided which contrasts growth of two large cohorts of boys in different geographical and social settings, and compares the growth patterns of thin and exogenously obese subjects and of early and later maturers.

American Queenmaker
Author: Julie Des Jardins
Publisher: Basic Books
ISBN: 1541645472
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 350
Book Description
The first biography of Missy Meloney, the most important woman you've never heard of Marie "Missy" Mattingly Meloney was born in 1878, in an America where women couldn't vote. Yet she recognized the power that women held as consumers and family decision-makers, and persuaded male publishers and politicians to take them seriously. Over the course of her life as a journalist, magazine editor-in-chief, and political advisor, Missy created the idea of the female demographic. After the passage of the 19th Amendment she encouraged candidates to engage with and appeal to women directly. In this role, she advised Presidents from Hoover and Coolidge to FDR. By the time she died in 1943, women were a recognized political force to be reckoned with. In this groundbreaking biography, historian Julie Des Jardins restores Missy to her rightful place in American history.
