Book Description
How can we guard ourselves against becoming trapped and overcome by our besetting temptations? John Owen (1616-1683) shows how watching and praying before entering into temptation is key. Jesus gave this command to the disciples on the night he was betrayed (Matt 26:14). This book provides practical suggestions for this work, but it also emphasizes our utter dependence on God and the power of the gospel to keep us from the "hour of temptation." This book was originally published in 1658 as Of Temptation: The Nature and Power of it, The Danger of entering into it, and The Means of preventing that Danger with A Resolution of sundry Cases thereunto belonging. This edition attempts to make Owen's writing more accessible to modern readers. It includes the following updates: Complete and carefully updated text. Sentence-level rewriting and rewording for clarity. Modern English sentence structure. Modern English vocabulary. Updated organization and headings. English Standard Version (ESV) scripture references. Scripture quotations in footnotes. Active table of contents.

Book Description
Have you ever heard a Bible interpretation or a scientifically-based argument that just didn't seem correct? Did you wish you knew how to show that it wasn't true? In a postmodern society, Christians are increasingly confronted with assertions that contradict the principles they believe. They need to be able to critically analyze arguments and know how to refute, in a gentle way, those assertions that are not true. In order to do this Christians need three sets of skills: -hermeneutical skills -- to know how to accurately interpret God's Word and be able to correct misinterpretations of Scripture; -research design and statistical skills -- to be able to examine statements about God's world and evaluate whether or not they represent valid conclusions from the data; -knowledge of logical fallacies -- in order to be able to identify when invalid inductive or deductive conclusions were being drawn, either from God's Word or from research studies about God's world. This book will help you be able to do the following: -know and use valid hermeneutical skills; -understand research design and statistical analysis techniques; -recognize logical fallacies and replace them with accurate analyses. An excellent resource for pastors, Sunday school teachers, and group leaders, this book is as practical as it is valuable for persons who want to discern truth and refute error in a spirit of love.

Book Description
A Case for Mixed-Audience with Reference to the Warning Passages in the Book of Hebrews discusses the nature of the warnings in Hebrews and how these warnings relate to the theological question of the eternal security of believers. The main argument is that these warnings are intended to target a particular segment of the author's community, about whose appropriation of and subsequent attitude toward the Christian message he was deeply concerned. That is to say, while the book of Hebrews is addressed as a message of encouragement to the community as a whole, its warnings are aimed at a certain element in the community whose salvation is threatened by a possible dangerous course of action. The book implies that while the author is persuaded that the majority in the community are genuine believers, there are some about whose salvation he doubts; hence the «case for a mixed-audience». What is threatened, therefore, is not a salvation already possessed, but the salvation of those in danger of coming up short. Theologically, the work falls within the sphere of the Calvinistic-Arminian debate regarding the assurance of salvation and the perseverance of the saints. It argues strongly for the Calvinistic position, but does so within the confines of the discipline of biblical studies, and lends extensive exegetical support to the Calvinistic position on the warning passages. The book is highly recommended for Bible College and seminary students and professors, as well as pastors and lay leaders who must give answers to their parishoners on those tough warning passages in Hebrews.
