Book Description
Reflection seismics plays an important role in the exploration industry for the search of hydrocarbon reservoirs. A central process of the reflection seismic method is migration, the transformation of the recorded and processed seismic field data into an image of the subsurface. In this thesis, I focus on a migration technique that is widely investigated and frequently applied: true-amplitude Kirchhoff migration. The term true-amplitude implies that the effect of geometrical spreading is removed in the migration process and, hence, amplitudes in the final subsurface image become a measure of the angle-dependent reflection coefficient. This allows to study physical properties of reflectors in the earth and, thus, to characterize adjacent rock formations which is crucial for successful interpretation and exploration. As main result of this thesis, I present a new strategy to improve the efficiency as well as the image quality of (true-amplitude) Kirchhoff migration: making use of the kinematic wavefield attributes obtained with the Common-Reflection-Surface (CRS) stack method allows to determine minimum migration apertures. Furthermore, I show how to extend existing migration implementations to correctly handle data recorded with irregular acquisition geometry on a measurement surface with topographic variations as these aspects have a decisive impact on the final amplitudes.

Book Description
Presents a complete mathematical description of diffractions caused by seismic velocity discontinuities. Diffraction theory provides important physical insights into seismology and is a necessary part of describing the nature of a seismogram. The author describes elastic wave theory and relates it to the high-frequency approximations of ray theory.

Book Description
The use of diffraction imaging to complement the seismic reflection method is rapidly gaining momentum in the oil and gas industry. As the industry moves toward exploiting smaller and more complex conventional reservoirs and extensive new unconventional resource plays, the application of the seismic diffraction method to image sub-wavelength features such as small-scale faults, fractures and stratigraphic pinchouts is expected to increase dramatically over the next few years. “Seismic Diffraction” covers seismic diffraction theory, modeling, observation, and imaging. Papers and discussion include an overview of seismic diffractions, including classic papers which introduced the potential of diffraction phenomena in seismic processing; papers on the forward modeling of seismic diffractions, with an emphasis on the theoretical principles; papers which describe techniques for diffraction mathematical modeling as well as laboratory experiments for the physical modeling of diffractions; key papers dealing with the observation of seismic diffractions, in near-surface-, reservoir-, as well as crustal studies; and key papers on diffraction imaging.

Book Description
Within the past few decades, information technologies have been evolving at a tremendous rate, causing profound changes to our world and our ways of life. In particular, fiber optics has been playing an increasingly crucial role within the telecommunication revolution. Not only most long-distance links are fiber based, but optical fibers are increasingly approaching the individual end users, providing wide bandwidth links to support all kinds of data-intensive applications such as video, voice, and data services. As an engineering discipline, fiber optics is both fascinating and challenging. Fiber optics is an area that incorporates elements from a wide range of techno- gies including optics, microelectronics, quantum electronics, semiconductors, and networking. As a result of rapid changes in almost all of these areas, fiber optics is a fast evolving field. Therefore, the need for up-to-date texts that address this growing field from an interdisciplinary perspective persists. This book presents an overview of fiber optics from a practical, engineering perspective. Therefore, in addition to topics such as lasers, detectors, and optical fibers, several topics related to electronic circuits that generate, detect, and process the optical signals are covered. In other words, this book attempts to present fiber optics not so much in terms of a field of “optics” but more from the perspective of an engineering field within “optoelectronics.
