Resource Proportional Software Design for Emerging Systems
Author: Suparna Bhattacharya
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351682334
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 355
Book Description
Efficiency is a crucial concern across computing systems, from the edge to the cloud. Paradoxically, even as the latencies of bottleneck components such as storage and networks have dropped by up to four orders of magnitude, software path lengths have progressively increased due to overhead from the very frameworks that have revolutionized the pace of information technology. Such overhead can be severe enough to overshadow the benefits from switching to new technologies like persistent memory and low latency interconnects. Resource Proportional Software Design for Emerging Systems introduces resource proportional design (RPD) as a principled approach to software component and system development that counters the overhead of deeply layered code without removing flexibility or ease of development. RPD makes resource consumption proportional to situational utility by adapting to diverse emerging needs and technology systems evolution. Highlights: Analysis of run-time bloat in deep software stacks, an under-explored source of power-performance wastage in IT systems Qualitative and quantitative treatment of key dimensions of resource proportionality Code features: Unify and broaden supported but optional features without losing efficiency Technology and systems evolution: Design software to adapt with changing trade-offs as technology evolves Data processing: Design systems to predict which subsets of data processed by an (analytics or ML) application are likely to be useful System wide trade-offs: Address interacting local and global considerations throughout software stacks and hardware including cross-layer co-design involving code, data and systems dimensions, and non-functional requirements such as security and fault tolerance Written from a systems perspective to explore RPD principles, best practices, models and tools in the context of emerging technologies and applications This book is primarily geared towards practitioners with some advanced topics for researchers. The principles shared in the book are expected to be useful for programmers, engineers and researchers interested in ensuring software and systems are optimized for existing and next generation technologies. The authors are from both industry (Bhattacharya and Voigt) and academic (Gopinath) backgrounds.

ISBN: 0387254463

Pages : 438
Book Description
The first report that rapid eye movements occur in sleep in humans was published in 1953. The research journey from this point to the realization that sleep consists of two entirely independent states of being (eventually labeled REM sleep and non-REM sleep) was convoluted, but by 1960 the fundamental duality of sleep was well established including the description of REM sleep in cats associated with “wide awake” EEG patterns and EMG suppression. The first report linking REM sleep to a pathology occurred in 1961 and a clear association of sleep onset REM periods, cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations and sleep paralysis was fully established by 1966. When a naïve individual happens to observe a full-blown cataplexy attack, it is both dramatic and unnerving. Usually the observer assumes that the loss of muscle tone represents syncope or seizure. In order to educate health professionals and the general public, Christian Guilleminault and I made movies of full-blown cataplectic episodes (not an easy task). We showed these movies of cataplexy attacks to a number of professional audiences, and were eventually rewarded with the report of a similar abrupt loss of muscle tone in a dog. We were able to bring the dog to Stanford University and with this as the trigger, we were able to develop the Stanford Canine Narcolepsy Colony. Breeding studies revealed the genetic determinants of canine narcolepsy, an autosomal recessive gene we termed canarc1. Emmanuel Mignot took over the colony in 1986 and began sequencing DNA, finally isolating canarc1 in 1999.

Dale's Principle and Communication between Neurones
Author: Neville N. Osborne
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483150100
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 213
Book Description
Dale's Principle and Communication Between Neurones is based on a colloquium of the Neurochemical Group of the Biochemical Society, held at Oxford University, July 1982. This book focuses on communication between neurones by means of chemical signals. The book contains an introductory chapter by V. P. Whittaker and nine further chapters on various aspects of the chemical communication processes between neurones. Topics covered include chemical communication between excitable cells; the neuroendocrine division of the nervous system; evidence for a neurone having the capacity to use two chemicals in the same process; and non-synaptic interneuronal communication. Each article is based on the excellent lectures given by the main authors and the discussion which ensued in the one-day colloquium held in Oxford. The final chapter is a specially invited contribution by Drs. Polak and Varndell, who agreed to produce an article on their new method of localising transmitter-like molecules at the electron-microscopic level.

Hearing Loss in the Elderly
Author: Sava Soucek
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447118057
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 184
Book Description
In their preface, the authors highlight the great social and medical importance of hearing loss in the elderly, an ever-increasing prob lem. It is, therefore, most appropriate that a monograph, devoted to research in this field, features as an addition to the Bloomsbury Series in Clinical Science. Written by two leading authorities, the book reviews the past and present literature, details the clinical aspects and considers the electrophysiological and histopatho logical issues basic to the overall problem. It continues the high standard and excellence fostered by previous issues in the Series. London, August 1990 Jack Tinker Preface The number of very old people in the community is steadily increasing so the hearing loss that many of them endure has become a disorder of social and medical importance. Only by a greater scientific knowledge of old age deafness can there be any possibility for improvement in the care offered to its sufferers.

High Velocity Microparticles in Space
Author: Anatoly Belous
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030041581
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
This book describes for readers the protection of electronic hardware in space vehicles from the negative effects of space dust and electromagnetic irradiation. The authors explain the mechanisms of “space dust” (high velocity particles in space), the effects on the on-board electronic hardware of space vehicles, and development of protection methods from these influences on humans, equipment and microcircuits. Coverage includes hard-to-find technical information on the design of special boosters for accelerating microparticles to space velocities, techniques for conducting experiments on Earth, data processing, and practical examples. The authors also discuss fabrication technologies and composition of special, radio absorbent materials for protecting space vehicles from the electromagnetic irradiation.
