They keep in constant circulation the elements which are most essential for plant and animal life. They break down the complex organic molecules, built up by plants and animals, into the simple mineralized constituents, making the elements again available for the growth of cultivated and uncultivated plants which in their turn supply further food for animals. Just as man and other animals, as well as higher plants, find their habitat on the surface of the soil or immediately below it, so do the microbes live largely within the upper few inches of the earth's crust, where they carry out their important activities, supplying a continuous stream of nutrients in an available form for the growth of higher plants. This surface pellicle of the earth is thus found to be the seat of numerous processes of incalculable importance in the life of man, animals, and plants, enabling them to carry out their normal existence on our planet. Just as man and animals are determined in their development by the supply of plant food, so is the growth of plants determined by the activities of microorganisms in the soil. The microbes were probably among the first living organisms which appeared on our planet millions of years ago. Although their presence in ancient rocks is largely speculative, it is reasonable to assume, from an appreciation of their specific physiological processes, that they may have lived normally on the earth long before it was a fit habitat for higher plants and animals. Excerpt from Micro-Organisms and Fermentation Beer yeast was sown on a moist slice of bread; the culture was carefully covered with a glass shade, and all manner of precautions were Observed in order to protect the growth from external contamination. After some days a growth of mould appeared, as is always the case with moist bread; and the conclusion was therefore drawn that the beer yeast was the origin of the mould, and that, consequently, yeast and mould fungi were different phases of development of one and the same species. A number of years elapsed before what are now universally acknowledged to be the Obvious requirements of such investiga tions were put in practice, namely, that the first thing to be ascertained is the point from which to start before any con elusions can be drawn. This requirement was gradually defined with greater precision, and at last, as we shall see later, a point was reached which satisfies this demand in a higher degree than has hitherto been the case in the allied branches of science. A microscope capable of magnifying to the extent of 1000 diameters is, as a rule, necessary for the investigation Of micro organisms. F or the yeast and mould fungi the only preparation generally required consists in placing a drop of the liquid con taining the organisms on an Object-glass, and spreading it out in a thin layer by means of a cover - glass. When cultivated on solid substances, a very small portion of the growth is first mixed with a drop of water. Excerpt from A Compilation of Culture Media for the Cultivation of Microorganisms The contributions relating to the various substrates and media used for the cultivation Of bacteria, yeasts, and molds, are widely scattered in the literature. Very frequently they are not adequately indexed. For some years it has been felt that a key to the various media and substrates proposed for the growth Of microorganisms would prove helpful. The fact that these formulae were not readily available has led to a great amount of duplication in the literature. A search Of the literature has therefore been undertaken and the formulae for about 7000 various media that have been proposed brought together. The task Of securing this material was performed most acceptably by Mr. H. W. Schoenlein, who was also associated in the development of the keys The task Of organizing the compilation, of planning the presentation, and of final editing was undertaken by Dr. Max Levine. It was found possible greatly to curtail the number of separate formulae by use Of the subheading Variants in many cases. The compilation presented in the following pages was made possible by a grant to the Society of American Bacteriologists by the Digestive Ferments Company of Detroit, Michigan. At the request of the Society of American Bacteriologists, the Department of Bacteriology at the Iowa State College accepted the task of compilation.
