Book Description
Excerpt from Methods Used to Control Pollination of Pines in the Sierra Nevada of California In the transect of the Sierra Nevada from Sacramento through El Dorado County, Pin/us ponderosa occurs over an elevational range of approximately feet (100 feet). On comparable aspects, trees at low elevations mature their flowers earlier than do those at high elevations. Thus, pollen from trees at low elevations may be in the air several weeks before trees at higher elevations mature their ovulate flowers. Between feet and feet, there is a span of approximately 35 days over which P. Ponderosa sheds its pollen. Other species of pine behave similarly.
