Book Description
Micronutrient malnutrition affects approximately 2 billion people worldwide. The adverse effects of micronutrient deficiencies are profound and include premature death, poor health, blindness, growth stunting, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and low work capacity. Preventing Micronutrient Deficiencies provides a conceptual framework based on past experience that will allow funders to tailor programs to existing regional/country capabilities and to incorporate within these programs the capacity to address multiple strategies (i.e., supplementation/fortification/food-based approaches/public health measures) and multiple micronutrient deficiencies. The book does not offer recommendations on how to alleviate specific micronutrient deficienciesâ€"such recommendations are already available through the publications of diverse organizations, including the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Micronutrient Initiative, World Bank, United Nations Childrens' Fund, and the World Health Organization. Instead, this volume examines key elements in the design and implementation of micronutrient interventions, including such issues as: The importance of iron, vitamin A, and iodine to health. Populations at risk for micronutrient deficiency. Options for successful interventions and their cost. The feasibility of involving societal sectors in the planning and implementation of interventions. Characteristics of successful interventions. The book also contains three in-depth background papers that address the prevention of deficiencies of iron, vitamin A, and iodine.

Book Description
Vitamin A deficiency affects some 127 million preschool children globally, putting them at increased risk of sickness and death. But supplementation is cost-effective and has proven potential to reduce the yearly number of preventable child deaths. This report tracks the progress of supplementation programming following 10 years of global advocacy. It is a 'scorecard' for countries and the international community on progress in scaling up one of the most effective child survival interventions available - a prerequisite for achieving MDG 4.

Book Description
Abstract: An authoritative text for clinical nutritionists, developed from a 1986 workshop sponsored by the US National Research Council's Subcommittee on Vitamin A Deficiency Prevention and Control, provides guidance on the planning of several longitudinal field trials proposed by the US Agency for International Development's Office of Nutrition to assess the impact of vitamin A supplementation on child mortality. The text sections cover: the rationale for field trials; the design, results, and conclusions of a field trial conducted in Indonesia; a critique and description of field study designs, methods, and measurement techniques proposed for studies in Bangladesh, the Sudan, India and the Gambia, and to assess mortality and morbidity in the Philippines; and a detailed discussion of methodological considerations for vitamin A supplementation field studies (covering study design and its implementation, measurement issues, and ethical issues). A summary of the Subcommittee's findings with respect to expected outcomes and study design is appended.

Book Description
Laboratory Assessment of Vitamin Status provides a comprehensive understanding of the limitations of commonly used approaches used for the evaluation of vitamin status, reducing harm in the general health setting. It outlines the application of 'Best Practice' approaches to the evaluation of vitamin status, giving physicians and other healthcare professionals the opportunity to make evidence-based interventions. Nearly every metabolic and developmental pathway in the human body has a dependency on at least one micronutrient. Currently, the clinical utility of approaches taken by laboratories for the assessment of vitamin status is generally poorly understood, missing the opportunity to diagnosis vitamin deficiencies. This essential reference gives clinical and biomedical scientists an understanding of the limitations of commonly used approaches to the evaluation of vitamin status in the general health setting through change in practice. Nutritionists and dietitians gain an understanding of more sophisticated markers of vitamin status. - Describes specialist assays in sufficient detail to enable laboratories to replicate what is being performed by expert groups - Provides detailed information that supports laboratories in the setting up of methods for the evaluation of vitamin status - Informs laboratories looking for third party providers of specialist investigations - Provides an essential overview of reference ranges for each vitamin
