Book Description
The effluent from mercury collected during the photochemical separation of the .sup. 196 Hg isotope is often contaminated with particulate mercurous chloride, Hg.sub. 2 Cl.sub. 2. The use of mechanical filtering via thin glass tubes, ultrasonic rinsing with acetone (dimethyl ketone) and a specially designed cold trap have been found effective in removing the particulate (i.e., solid) Hg.sub. 2 Cl.sub. 2 contaminant. The present invention is particularly directed to such filtering.

Book Description
In Silver by Fire, Silver by Mercury: A Chemical History of Silver Refining in New Spain and Mexico, 16th to 19th Centuries, Saul Guerrero combines historical research with geology and chemistry to refute the current prevailing narrative of a primitive effort dominated by mercury and its copious emissions to the air. Based on quantitative historical data, visual records and geochemical fundamentals, Guerrero analyses the chemical and economic reasons why two refining processes had to share production, creating along the way major innovations in the chemical recipes, milling equipment, mercury recycling practice, and industrial architecture and operations. Their main environmental impact was lead fume and the depletion of woodlands from smelting, and the transformation of mercury into calomel during the patio process.

Book Description
Crude oil and natural gas are predominantly composed by hydrocarbon atoms, water and a wide spectrum of elements at low levels such as arsenic, vanadium and mercury. The presence of mercury in crude oil and natural gas varies in each stage of extraction and transformation process because it distributes unequally among the vapour, condensate and aqueous phase in function of the pressure and temperature. Mercury causes a wide range of problems for refiners as for example: equipment degradation, toxic waste generation, health impacts and poisoning of catalysts. In order to remove the contaminant, there are different technologies based on adsorption, chemical oxidation, precipitation or ion exchange treatments. The use of each one depends on the concentration and the physical and chemical state of mercury in crude oil or natural gas.

Book Description
Petroleum refining involves refining crude petroleum as well as producing raw materials for the petrochemical industry. This book covers current refinery processes and process-types that are likely to come on-stream during the next three to five decades. The book includes (1) comparisons of conventional feedstocks with heavy oil, tar sand bitumen, and bio-feedstocks; (2) properties and refinability of the various feedstocks; (3) thermal processes versus hydroprocesses; and (4) the influence of refining on the environment.
