Renato Severino, architect, graduated in the Fifties at the University of Florence with Adalberto Libera, started a shining career very young, thanks to his high-level skill that made him enter the upper range of italian architectural teams of that period. He worked with Adalberto Libera and Pier Luigi Nervi and, in 1964, at just 34 years old, he designed the Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest university campus in Cape Coast, Ghana. His interest in light technology led him to build the Italsider’s resort of Cesana Torinese (1963), one of the first responsive high-tech architecture in Italy. In the United States, where he moved in 1968, his professional activity gained a worldwide extension, with works in America, Latin America, Africa and Europe. He published and researched extensively on sustainability and industrialized systems. In 1970 he wrote Equipotential Space. Freedom in Architecture, a passionate vision of architecture and technology as a means to enable society to shape and control the environment. Severino’s architecture and his research into new urban configurations make him an architect ahead of his time, who has envisaged many ongoing and future concerns. His work and his vision of the future enrich the history of architecture with yet another protagonist who has challenged Modernism beyond the boundaries of its time. This is his first autobiography that revisits all his work, revealing the development of a period of great changes.

As the theoretical alignments within academia shift, this book introduces a surprising variety of realism to abolish the old positivist-theory dichotomy that has haunted Art History. Demanding frankly the referential detachment of the objects under study, the book proposes a stratified, multi-causal account of art history that addresses postmodern concerns while saving it from its errors of self-refutation. Building from the very basic distinction between intransitive being and transitive knowing, objects can be affirmed as real while our knowledge of them is held to be fallible. Several focused chapters address basic problems while introducing philosophical reflection into art history. In this volume, fifteen scholars from the United States, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Colombia discuss the social implications of new technologies. Their essays address the cultural worlds that crystallize around technologies, the challenges to democracy that they pose, and the responsibility of modern technology for forcing a public response to new social and moral issues. Three themes define the three sections into which the volume is divided: "New Worlds," "New Technologies," and "New Issues." The essays in the section "New Worlds" range from optimism that new technologies will produce a better world than that of 1992, through a nonjudgmental discussion of the transformation of our "lifeworld" that new technologies are effecting, to deep concern for the viability of the world that modern technology has already created. In "New Technologies," the focus is on political responses to modern technologies. The authors in this section see the challenge to understanding and controlling our technological world in reshaping existing relations of social power and authority, and in creating new institutions more adequate to the sociopolitical realities of the process of technological innovation. While the contributors in the first two sections of the volume argue that broad changes in values and institutions are preconditions of a more beneficent relationship among people, nature, and technology, those in the section "New Issues" adopt narrower, more specific, viewpoints. Their essays address the political values underlying the Deep Ecology movement, the ethics of military technologies, the capacity of democratic institutions for a public role in setting technology policies, and science and technology literacy mechanisms. Collectively, these essays reflect the growing international concern with the role played by technological innovation in a rapidly changing world, and they point toward the formulation of concrete political platforms for informed social responses to the innovation process.
