Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of Mr. Serjeant Bellasis: 1800-1873 IN this new issue, extracts from a letter to John Brande Morris are added in a note, pp. 14, 15, as also a fresh sentence or two of Cardinal Newman in notes at pp. 15, 154 (from letters to the Serjeant or to his family); and another illustration of the Serjeant's thoughtfulness for priests will be found at p. 183. The ecclesias tical pamphlets are more fully cited, and the appendices, saving the first of them, are either merged in the text or figure as foot-notes. To the Count de Grasset I am indebted for some few dam with respect to the French friends at Hyeres. With regard to the larger illustra tions in the first edition, the second portrait of the Serjeant by Maclise, those of the Rev. Dr. Bellasis, and Mrs. J. Maude (the Serjeant's parents), of Hope Scott, and E. Badeley and the foe sz'mz'le letter to Dr. Pusey now disappear, while Miss Giberne's Margaret Street Chapel at Easter is published for the first time, and new wood blocks are given of the Rev. J. Brande Morris, Canon Oakeley, the Rev. C. B. Garside, Mr. J. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
When in 1858 Newman was retiring from the Catholic University in Dublin, friends approached him when confronted with the problem of where to educate their sons and he became the central figure in the establishment of the Oratory School. Newmand and his co-founders - a trio of brilliant Catholic laymen, two parliamentary barristers and Lord Acton - faced stiff resistance in setting up the first Catholic public school; and once it opened their troubles were compunded by a staff mutiny and threats of closure from Rome. This is no standard story because the Oratory School was no standard school. It was the school's fate to be caught up in many of the key controversies of the time, not least because of its association with Newman; and for this reason the tale of its formative years under Newman provides important insights into Victorian life and English Catholic history. The story of the early years of the school, which counted Gerard Manley Hopkins among its masters, Hilaire Belloc among its pupils, and Newman as its guiding light, is told here fully for the first time.
