In them the reader will find his best biography, and a noble monument of services - theological, political, literary, and social. A few facts of Mr. Fox's personal history are given at the end. The Editors had no materials at their disposal, out of which a formal record of his life could be composed; nor, if such materials had existed, could they have obtained the services of any one competent to work them up. This is the less to be regretted because the writings now offered to the public tell their own story of mental culture and moral characteristics. The Lectures not published during Mr. Fox's lifetime, but contained in this edition, are given partly from shorthand notes taken by a reporter engaged by a few members of the Finsbury congregation, and partly from similar reports which Samuel Courtauld, Esq. Fox, Vol. 9: Reports of Lectures at South-Place Chapel, Finsbury, Supplementary to the Course on the Religious Ideas This volume-the ninth of the series - is the first containing matter previously unpublished. In the autumn and winter of 1848-9 Mr. Fox delivered a course of Lectures on The Religious Ideas. These were published in one volume, under that title, in 1849; and they form the concluding part of the eighth volume of this series. The various strictures which the work drew forth from writers of very diverse opinions in theology, subsequently induced Mr. Fox to devote at least six other courses of lectures, forty-six in number, to its defence and further exposition. Of these, four courses are published, for the first time, in this volume. The remain ing two courses - on, 1, The Scriptural Expression of The Religious Ideas; and, 2, Moral Philosophy in connection therewith - will form the first part of the tenth volume. Like all the lectures previously published, they were reported by a stenographer; but they have all received the benefit, to some extent, of Mr. Fox's own revision. Viewed in con nection with The Religious Ideas and with each other, they are of considerable value and interest, as expressing his final convictions, and exemplifying his happiest methods of conducting theological controversy.
