Book Description
JENARO TALENS (escritor).

Book Description
Light, words, and the ephemeral -that shifting condition of random- are concepts present in some form in the entire oeuvre of Chema Alvargonzalez (1960-2009), an artist who divided the two decades of his career between Barcelona and Berlin. Whereas Bruce Nauman and Dan Flavin are Alvargonzalez's direct sources in the way he configures the space through experimentation with lighting, Mallarmé serves as the basis of his linguistic approach to the practice of art. Alvargonzalez often accords words the status of objects which -rather than locking in a meaning- enables him to achieve a semantic openness that only the great poets are capable of. In his vanitas pieces, another recurring theme, Alvargonzalez invites us to reflect on death; in his reference to Goethe's last words (Licht, mehr Licht!) he draws our attention to the close relationship that he forges between nature and poetry.

Book Description
This volume examines recent examples of Argentine literature, film, theatre and visual art from the children of the disappeared. By exploring their creative narration of childhood memories and the controversial use of parody, humour and fantasy, Maguire considers how this post-dictatorship generation are increasingly looking towards the past in order to disrupt the politics of the present. More broadly, this interdisciplinary study also scrutinizes the relevance of postmemory in a Latin American context, arguing that the politics of local Argentine memory practices must be taken actively into account if such a theoretical framework is to remain a productive and appropriate analytical lens. The Politics of Postmemory thus engages critically with theories of cultural memory in the Argentine, Latin American and global contexts, resulting in a timely and innovative text that will be of significant interest to students and scholars in the fields of, among others, cultural studies, film studies, critical theory and trauma studies.

Book Description
Photography, Truth and Reconciliation charts the connections between photography and a crucial issue in contemporary social history. The book examines the prevalence of photography in cultural responses to processes of truth and reconciliation, and argues that photographs are a valuable means through which stories can be retold and historiography can be rethought. Five compelling case studies from Argentina, Canada, Australia, South Africa and Cambodia underscore the special role that this medium has played in facilitating processes of recovery, and in reconstructing suppressed histories, even when a documentary record of the events does not exist. The diverse practices addressed in this book – including artistic, protest, institutional, archival, legal and personal photography – prompt a new consideration of photography’s links to presence, place, time, spectatorship and justice. Collectively, these practices attest to photography’s key role in transitional justice, and in shaping historical understanding internationally. Important reading for students taking photography, visual culture, history and media studies courses, Photography, Truth and Reconciliation explores key historical and theoretical themes, including photography and testimony, international discourses on human rights and justice, and problematic notions of public and collective memory.
