Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Department of Agriculture in India: The Composition of the Oil-Seeds of India The only samples which were not clean were those from the Punjab. These, excepting that from the Kangra district, were mixtures of large and small linseed together with rape, wheat, etc., and straw, and they compared very badly with the general purity of the samples from other parts of India. Book Description
Excerpt from Bombay in the Days of George IV: Memoirs of Sir Edward West, Chief Justice of the King's Court During Its Conflict With the East India Company, With Hitherto Unpublished Documents The greater part of this necessary vindication of the acts of one, whose reputation has been at the mercy of his opponents, was written some time ago. It has no relation to present vexed questions. Whatever. Enchantment distance of time may lend, Bombay in the days of George the Fourth can have no more resemblance to modern Bombay, than a Collector in the time of Thackeray, to the scrupulous and efficient India Civil Servant of to-day. Nor is it intended in any way to depreciate the great work - taken as a whole - accomplished by England in India. England's ideals are high, and she criticises her actions with severity; but, if her rule in that vast Empire be compared, not with that of an ideal Government, in a perfect world, but with such as exist, or are known to have existed, on the earth, fair-minded people must agree that the British nation has been worthy of its sovereignty. There is no perfectly even advance in human affairs. All true progress seems to be as inter mittent as the ebb and flow of a steadily advancing tide on a sandy seashore; and nations. Book Description
Excerpt from A Memoir of Sir Salar Jung G. C. S. I IN October last, with the consent and approval of His Excellency, the preparation of a work giving an Historical and Descriptive Sketch of His Highness's Dominions was commenced in my office. T he' want of such a compilation had long been felt, and as it had been the intention of His Highness to visit England this year, a book of reference concerning the great Province of Which he; is the hereditary ruler would have proved useful to all who desired to know something about Haidarabad and its Prince. The compilation of the work was completed a short time previous to the occurrence of the melancholy event which has led to the postponement of His Highness's tour. The majority of the following pages form a portion of the book; but as it is believed that the public would welcome a Memoir, however brief, of one who has been a conspicuous figure amongst the great men of India for the past thirty years, it was decided to print the Memoir in advance of the larger work. The latter is also in. The publishers' hands, and will be issixed in the course of a month or two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Kali Prossunno Singh AN apology is scarcely needed for this presentation in an English dress of the mono graph on Kali Prossunno Singh which I wrote in Bengali and published about five years ago. The name of the illustrious translator of the Mahabharat and author of Hatam Panchar Nahshu deserves to be more widely known than it is outside the country of his birth, and as English is now the prevailing language among the cultured classes all over India and the greater portion of the world besides, an English edition of his biography seems to be the best means of giving a greater publicity to his name and fame. The time, too, is opportune for, the semi centenary of his death takes place to-day and, by way of refreshing the memory of his noble exertions for the moral and intellectual advance ment of his countrymen, a recapitulation of his career cannot be unacceptable to the public at the present juncture. Some fresh materials have been collected by me since I published the Bengali edition, and I have incorporated them in their preper places in the present volume, which, I trust, will be received by the public with as much favor as the original work in Bengali. Book Description
The enchanting autobiography of the seven-time James Beard Award-winning cookbook author and acclaimed actress who taught America how to cook Indian food. “Wistful, funny and tremendously satisfying.... Jaffrey's taste memories sparkle with enthusiasm, and her talent for conveying them makes the book relentlessly appetizing." —The New York Times Book Review Whether climbing the mango trees in her grandparents' orchard in Delhi or picnicking in the Himalayan foothills on meatballs stuffed with raisins and mint, tucked into freshly baked spiced pooris, Madhur Jaffrey’s life has been marked by food, and today these childhood pleasures evoke for her the tastes and textures of growing up. Following Jaffrey from India to Britain, this memoir is both an enormously appealing account of an unusual childhood and a testament to the power of food to prompt memory, vividly bringing to life a lost time and place. Also included here are recipes for more than thirty delicious dishes from Jaffrey’s childhood.
