Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Lenawee County, Michigan, From the Earliest Historical Times Down to the Present, Including a Genealogical and Biographical Record of Representative Families in Lenawee County, Vol. 1 It has been the aim in the preparation of these volumes to give a faithful account of the early settlements in Lenawee county, to note the progress that attended the noble efforts of the pioneer citizens and their worthy descendants, and also to make the reader acquainted, by biographical mention, with many, of those to whom we of the present day are indebted in no small measure for the ex cellent advantages we enjoy. Records of pioneer times are interest ing, and they are not without their lessons of instruction. In Len awee county only a very few of the early settlers are now living, and those who still survive are the lingering bonds between us and by gone days, transmitting the traditions of early times to the in quiring minds of the present generation. So, it is by the light of the recorded past, as it appears upon printed pages, that one must follow in the foot-prints of the adventurous and enterprising pio neer. He is seen, as it were, amid the labors and struggles neces sary to convert the wilderness into a fruitful field. The reader sits by his cabin fire, partaking of his homely hospitality, and listens to the accounts which he is pleased to give of frontier life, and of the dangers, trials, hardships, and sufferings endured by himself and others, in their efforts to make for themselves homes in re gions remote from civilization. And through these pioneer records and printed pages, the way is followed along to the present. From small beginnings are seen the' mighty achievements of industry the complex results of daring enterprise, subduing and creative energy, and untiring perseverance. Book Description
Though living far north of the Mason-Dixon line, many mid-nineteenth-century citizens of Michigan rose up to protest the moral offense of slavery; they published an abolitionist newspaper and founded an anti-slavery society, as well as a campaign for emancipation. By the 1840s, a prominent abolitionist from Illinois had crossed the state line to Michigan, establishing new stations on the Underground Railroad. This book is the first comprehensive exploration of abolitionism and the network of escape from slavery in the state. First-person accounts are interwoven with an expansive historical overview of national events to offer a fresh examination of Michigan's critical role in the movement to end American slavery.
